USB MP3 reader for stock ALPINE

Hi everyone!
This is my first post directly from Portugal!
Just love my March 2011 FL2.
I would to know some information about a device that can read USB pen drives over the stock ALPINE headset. The purpose is to access MP3 files over a pen and stopping with the CD hardware (and nightmare).
On my previous FL1 I had a ALPINE radio (not stock; this one was from PHILIPS) that have the possibility of reading MP3 files over a USB back connection. Since the stock head unit can reads MP3 i think it's possible to get something, don't you ?
Thanks for the help.
Best
Miguel Ribeiro

Hi Miguel, welcome to Freel2.com Smile

I fitted the Land Rover Audio Control System part no VPLFE0002 which allows iPod, iPhone and USB key/MP3 unit connectivity as well as control via the steering wheel controls (if you have them).

It works very well but if bought new it's expensive, I was lucky and got one 2nd hand.

cheers - Andy

Dear Andy
Thanks for the quick replay.
Are you positive that it reads MP3 files over USB pen-drive?
If there are folders with the music inside can it read it?
Thanks again.
Cheers
Nuno

Hi Miguel, I carried out some testing to check the USB capabilities (had to read the manual Rolling Eyes )

I can confirm that if you organise your MP3s into folders (for instance by album/artist) then they are played when the USB stick is connected and audio system is in AUX mode. However you can also just dump all MP3s in the root of the USB stick.

However when MP3s are being played there is NO ID3 tag info on the audio system display (annoying Neutral ) so you have no visual indication of what's currently playing...

You can scroll through the tracks (up/down) using the >>| and |<<buttons>>| and |<<buttons>>| and |<< buttons for more than 2 seconds to activate cue or review a track.

If you press, hold and release the telephone HANG-UP button for 2 seconds you toggle between random on and random off.

If you have an iPod/iPhone connected it take precedence.

When you disconnect the USB stick the control module memorizes the play back position and will resume when connected again.

I hope that helps answer your questions. Very Happy

cheers - Andy

Dear Andy
Thanks for the amazing post!
Every thing is OK; only the issue of not seeing the name of the track/artist is annoying; it's funny because when i use a CD recorded with MP3 files, it's only possible to see the artist/album name in the general list, but when you choose a particular track the name of it and the artist disappears completely; so, probably the same thing happens with the PEN.
You said that your part is not new; do you think it's possible to get another one in england? Here in Portugal is very expensive and the used market for Freelanders is ridiculous; from 2006 until now, only 35 FL2 were sold in Portugal Sad
Here the cars are very expensive; the minimum wage is 400 euros; a FL like mine costs 45.000 euros! with the same price, people buy stations or SUV's form AUDI, MERCEDES and BMW; stupid option, i think Smile
Best regards
Nuno

Hi Miguel. no problem...very glad to help our Portuguese friends Very Happy

The only place you might find a 2nd hand unit would be on EBay, occasionally they appear for sale Rolling Eyes . I was luck enough to buy mine from another FreeL2 forum member just a few weeks ago Cool .

Anyway, at least you have a very exclusive car in Portugal but I guess that also means it's very expensive to get anything done on it too, servicing, spares etc etc? Big Cry

cheers - Andy
