Turbo problem?

Hi All. I am a member on disco3 site so hope you guys are just as helpful with questions.

My wife's 2007 diesel auto,59000km's, has just started making a strange noise. It occurs after about 15 minutes of driving once engine warms up properly. When accelerating it makes a 'Whooo" noise. The harder you accelerate, the louder the whoooo. When idling and then pressing down the accelerator the noise is the same.

It had all the latest software/firmware updates. It has not lost any power and fuel consumption has not changed.

Any advise would be appreciated.I am hoping it is not the turbo on the way out. Sad

not sure about under load, just know that the harder you accelerate the more the whooo or whine.

From my experience, that's normal. My car does it, my Dad's does it and so did his previous FL2. I'd only be concerned if it was getting louder and it's a noise you've not noticed in the past?? Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

would guess that the more it works (turbo charging...) the louder it gets.

Turbo Problem?

Well, the strange thing is that this noise has never been there before.....so why now? For the first 10 or 15 minutes of driving no noise, thereafter it starts and becomes really irritating. Car is going in to dealer today. Will post prognosis.

A jet engine is slightly different to a turbo, a turbo is driven and a jet engine drives.
On that basis maybe in future they may develop a turbo with an after burner facility then, that might be fun!.

in my experience a healthy turbo should whistle and a dead turbo (or at least dying turbo) will whoop and often blow a bit of smoke! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Oh no! - Now I am worrying that my turbo doesn't whistle - I must stop reading this website as it's making me a Freelander 2 hypochondriac. Last week I was worrying about different tread depths front and rear and before that about whether I would ever be be able to sell my Rimini red XL when the time comes as it's not black or grey, which so many of you seem to go for.

Maybe I should just enjoy it while it still goes and resign myself to the inevitable and start saving for a major repair bill or just get some sleep at night by trading it in for a Kuga. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

Chill and enjoy. Yours is like mine - it just works - so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, noises that suddenly come do warrant investigation - sounds like a turbo pipe or something similar.
good luck.

freedieselauto - OK I'm slightly deaf, but I've never been able to identify a "turbo whistle". And that's on seven vehicles driven regularly - Land Rovers, Sherpas and a truck. So maybe some people just can't hear it. Confused

Turbo Problem

Ok, lucky me....LR diagnosed a faulty power steering pump. The 'whoo' noise gets louder when turning steering wheel to left and right...noise does get softer when driving on motorway at speed. Noise is more pronounced at lower speeds and gear changes, even when steering straight.

This is apparently a common problem! They will replace power steering pump and steering rack with a 50% goodwill payment considering the low mileage.

Thanks for all the input.
