My main gripe is when you set a destination, it chooses the route, if you deviate off the given route it cannot seem to reroute to the destination, but it tries to find a route that will get you back to the original route which will not nessaceraly be the quickest.

I've not known one SatNav that doesn't do that... TomTom, Navtec, Mio et al.

The TomTom I have will if you deviate off route recalculate the best route to the destination, where as the LR Navtec, wants to reroute back to the original route,.

I must admit I am very disappointed with the Sat Nav in my FL2. It's not just the guidance that is poor but the maps are too. I have the latest maps loaded (2011/12) and on more than one occasion it has taken me down a dead end road and has also tried to get me to join the M5 through a service station and also join the M11 through an emergency services access road...! Neutral I have an old TomTom Go 300 which I bought about 5 years ago and it's functionality is far superior to that of the FL2.

All the VDO 5000 and 6000 did and brilliantly. Now I do accept they did cost a lot more than today's TomTom's etc. but so does this pathetic Land Rover offering.

Hi, just wanted to know if anyone had cracked this satnav. I would prefer to load a completely different system because my experience of using it has shown it to be next to useless. Infact I havn't completed a journey using it yet as it always takes me a route that is both longer and takes more time. These are my experiences so far:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SHORTENED~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So unless someone knows how to cure these issues, or i can install another system, then it will be back to sticking the Tom Tom on the dash as the onboard wont be used again.
I have spent many hours trying to find a way around these points, I even gave NavTech even more money and brought their latest overpriced (in my opinion) maps, in the hope this may also update the operating system software. To no ones surprise it does not help - It still takes up to 10 touches on the screen to enter a memorised location and start navigating. She still tells me there is heavy traffic without giving me a clue how heavy or where!!!
Now I don't blame NavTech for the badly designed system (just the expense of the Maps) and so I thought I will take it up with Land Rover. To my surprise the man I spoke to knew exactly what I was talking about. He told me he has had countless people say the same thing and you guessed it - To his knowledge nothing has been done about it.
SO - I removed the screen, made up a suitable bracket and mounted a VDO 7inch screen in its place. Fantastic I now have a car that navigates, like a dream. BUT now none of the Radio, Bluetooth, parking sensors and so on, work. This is because they are all routed through the screen so they can be muted when the Sat Nav speaks. I will now try and work out a way around that.
Tip to any new freelander buyers don't buy the Sat Nav with it, research and get one that works better.
Thanks for these replies, I was starting to think it was only me that thought this system was so bad.
Is there nothing we, as landrover owners, can not do to force landrover to address this issue. I'm sure they would be interested if they new it would be better to do something if it was to put people off bying their higher range models.
it must effect many other vehicles, I have heard it effects Jags aswell.
For the value of these cars I really did expect more.
As for the loss of your other functions, Can you not leave the old system connected and remount it behind the dash somewhere?
I'd like to see what you have done if you can post some photos.
What I was originally asking is if someone had cracked using the hardware installed but with another makers software. I dont know alot about these systems so please forgive my ignorance.
All those work on the MOST ring. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOST_Bus
So, I believe, if you took out the navi screen, then you may need to connect its MOST IN connection with its MOST OUT connection, like a short circuit.
Then the integrity/continuity of the MOST ring will be reestablished and all those mentioned will function again, after a disconnection of the battery in order for the MOST ring to reinitialize.
Because the car configuration file (CCF) stores the fact that you have the navi screen, the system will throw and error code, but besides that you'll be OK.
I agree - I always keep my Tomtom handy, as the FL one sometimes makes bizarre choices! I never trust it completely.
Sat nav trust issue...
Well guys, I've been following this and other threads about the sat-nav, but I have to say it's actually no worse than any other sat-nav I've had. (Just to put a log into the fire... Neutral
I've had Navigon before that, and even mobile phone navigators. Tom-tom, that many of you seem to favour, also leads down wrong roads and refuses to re-calculate. I went to Italy last year, trusting the nav to get me "there" and sure, it did, but the weirdest roads I've ever driven. I figured out that I had the setting "fastest road" which would then use some sort of database of congested routes etc. to calculate the trajectory.
And that takes me to the point that I would like to make, and no offense guys (also disclaimer that I don't live in the UK and therefore don't use post-code settings) - but the sat-nav is only as good as it's settings (and - yes - update of maps... Wink )
As you state, it's been known for ages, never trust your sat-nav completely (many articles in the papers about people ending up in ditches etc. due to their trusting the nav). In the end, the nav will get you there, but if you know a better road or if you look up and see "we're on the wrong way", then it's of course sensible to skip the nav and use the eyes and ears...
I think the interface of the nav is a bit outdated, and there are some strange feedback from the configuration (you never know if a setting is active or not) - it's not really that intuitive. I also think that THREE DVDs for European maps is just... well... antiquated. But it's really not so bad that I'd rip it out and replace it with a Tom-tom.... It's never too late to learn something new...
I installed the latest Volvo maps to my SatNav. According to the Volvo pdf there are over 4500 UK speed cam locations installed. Unfortunately, there is no means of accessing them on the LR system. Big Cry
I wholeheartedly agree with others on here. (Biscay, etc) This is a most disappointing system in all respects apart from its integration into the car's ICE etc. I use a TomTom Go740 Live on a daily basis when driving HGVs. That behaves impeccably, allowing for busy times of the day, live traffic updates, etc. Plus logical route planning that is easily examined. All I have to take into account is 7.5t limits and weak bridges etc.
When we go on holiday to Oslo in May (Netherlands/Germany/Denmark/Sweden/Norway) you can guess which SatNav I will be using! (the TomTom of course!) 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
E said before that I actually quite like the LR satnav. I think it is a bit behind now compared to other new cars in built units but then it is nearly 6-7 yrs old. Compared to others at the time it was quite advanced... Until recently you never got full post code search in some of the best built in navs
And as per previous post - the nav is only as good As its setup!
I much prefer my LR nav over a separate unit even if it does have its faults. If the next set of maps could include road speed and also gatso's then I think it would be as good as the rest!! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
As I said above, my present maps DO have speed cams - it is the LR system that cannot access them and will never do without some sort of factory software update - which, I am sure you will agree, is never going to happen! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
I'll take a look next week to see if the POIs used in TomTom are the same format that are used on the DVD. If so, it would be straightforard to add them and burn a new DL DVD.
I thought there were already some POIs on the FL system? I rarely use it, as it is my wife's car, but I may be confusing it with my car?
