Hi whtye, The Topo maps at $1 are a real bargain, just be aware that when they are installed you need to 'de-check' the urban maps and 'check' Topo in the map information screen otherwise the Garmin defaults to the urban maps. You then need to reverse the sequence to get back to urban mapping. I'm interested in your comment regarding higher resolution models with capacitive screens - what are they please?

Hi Graham, Yeah, those topo maps were a steal. I have the SD card permanently inserted into the GPS unit but never had to use them. I am sure I have both map sources (i.e topo and metro) selected and I just expected the GPS to switch to topo if I go near an off road track or away from metro roads. I just never have. I will have to play with it this weekend. As for the higher resolution models, I think they were the 3700 series models. They were far too expensive for me to consider and I was unsure of their suitability. All reports indicated that the 1490T was the best for the job in the FL2 and I followed those reports. I have been happy with the unit. It does a great job of getting me from A to B even though I know where I am going, I use to to estimate my ETA mostly. The bluetooth on the unit is terrible though. I have tried with numerous phones and had little to no success. The Internets are rife with people in similar situations to me. Cheers, Whytey 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame. |

Hi whtye, Thanks for that information, agree with you about the bluetooth and phone linkage - totally gave up on using it as anything but a GPS and, as that, I'm very pleased with it. On the mapping side, you have to select 'either or' topo or metro; if you check both boxes the unit defaults to metro maps. I found the information that Garmin supplied with the topo card useless. Like you, I assumed the unit would select the best map for the job, but after much frustration I spoke to Garmin who confirmed that you have to deselect metro maps for the topo to appear and than reselect metro when you are back in town. Unnecessarily cumbersome in my view, but still, the topo maps are a huge improvement off road and, oddly enough, seem to work OK in town but without the same backup information such as speed limits. When you do use it off road you need to use the 'zoom' facility to get the full range of details - I was amazed at how many dried up creeks are mapped!

Time to take it all back! After bumping into a 1490T in JB this week I decided to try their demo unit with my phone over bluetooth! Success! Lots of success, even when trying to break the connection during calls, etc, etc, every situation was handled just fine and the GPS unit would constantly re-connect to my phone and visa-versa. I decided to check for an update to the 1490T tonight and alas there was a (or indeed many) updates, some with a mention of bluetooth. I did the update and spent about 30 minutes sat in the car testing the GPS against my phone making incoming, outgoing and interrupted calls; transferring to and from the phone mid call etc, etc . Again, everything seems to be working well. Therefore, it looks like the unit itself does a good job with bluetooth now, it was the firmware version I was running that seemed to break it. For the record, this is now version 5.40 of the Garmin firmware. I am also using a HTC Hero (GSM) Android phone that is flashed with Cyanogen Mod 6.1 (unofficial Froyo/2.2 version of Android).
