That's the part when they all mention the mini fuse with the fly-lead attached.

It basically means you don't have to get into the fuse box just plug in the mini fuse and you immediately have a positive lead to connect to/from. 2002 Honda VFR800

Try flea-bay - do a serch for "add circuit" - these babies plug in then use the existing fuse.

The source for the mini fuses on the forum is for an Australian company. 2002 Honda VFR800

I just removed F5 10a fuse (and checked everythings still working Shocked ) and looking at it the blade posts come through to the top and that is where the fly lead is soldered. So it's a DIY job for me and my local Maplins have the mini fuses in stock as well.

G'Day EYorkshire, Good luck with your DIY on the fuse; I'm sorry, but I can't help with which is the 'dead' arm of the fuse. My lead goes to an add on power socket which the original Garmin plug then goes into. The Garmin plug has a fuse built in, so that protects the unit even if I've connected to the live side. That's the theory and my hope anyway! By the way, according to the handbook, that fuse is unused so there is nothing else fed from it.

Finished that part, put the fly lead on myself and ready to plug into F5 when I fit the SatNav, note the nearby earth bolt used. Thumbs Up

Dealer Fit Garmin

I was given a loan car last week with one of the Garmins fitted. Must say I was really impressed with its appearance and functionality (better than the Navman I currently have). When I returned the car I made enquiries about cost and availability. The dealer has quoted $1200 fitted. Have decided to go ahead and have one fitted next week.

Very neat job EYorkshire, particularly the soldering of the lead to the fuse - how did you manage not to melt the fuse? Please don't take this the wrong way, but are you aware that you can't feed 12v directly to the Garmin, it must be stepped down via the plug? I only mention it because I think the plug might not fit in the box behind the 1490. Apologies if you've already considered that.

I cut a little of the plastic away around one of the blade posts, this exposed enough metal to solder the flylead onto and using a fine iron it kept the heat fairly localised.

Yes, thanks to your original thread I realise that the Garmin plug has a built in voltage reducing module Thumbs Up , the plug will fit but not the plug and a socket so I will again solder the wires onto the plug point and earthed side contacts, and then heat shrink some insulation over it.

No apologies needed, it was you who got me interested in fitting this Thumbs Up

Fitted and working, just need to tidy the side fit up a little, works good on the ignition but would like to remove the safety accept message on switchon if anyone knows Thumbs Up

Good job! In my gallery is a drawing that gives dimensions for a mask that fits over the unit, not the 'full' clamped in version. I've put a picture in my gallery to show the effect - it would look a bit better than this normally, since it's lying on top of the full mask rather than properly mounted. It does have the advantage that the unit can be removed for map updates without removing the console. Sorry, but I don't know how to switch the 'safety' message off - at least it switches it self off after a few seconds, a Toyota I sometimes drive actually requires you to acknowledge that you have read it and agree to it or it, stays on permanently.

So I went on the Garmin website to download the latest 'Western European' maps (on purchase of the unit you are allowed one free update within 3 months). Holy Moses, Garmin must have a 'dialup server' as the estimated download time was 148 hours but in reality it took 2 1/2 hours + another hour to verify the files + just over another hour to install Shocked
I just hope the 3.2G file is worth it.

For easy updating of garmin software, maps, pictures etc. with the dealer installed 1490T unit I added 2 x short Mini usb 5 pin 5P B Male/Female extension cables jointed together, allowing enough extra length for accessing the connection from the void space adjacent to the open glovebox. With a notebook pc you can easily plug into the joining connection & on completion, just reconnect cables and tuck back into void space. I think this is a better solution than removing the centre console everytime. Note: don't try the up or down angled versions of these cables because they didn't work for me Evil or Very Mad , stick to the straight ones, available from ebay.
