The 'saga' continues.

Was told yesterdaty by Insurance company that costs had been signed off.
Was told this moring by repairer that they have not been authorised to do repairs and are awaiting visit from independent assessor to look at costs.
Call to insurers - yes this is the case - costs seem particularly high....... They weren't in car when he hit me!!!

Repairers have been instructed to order parts and start strip down pending assessors visit - due today.
Part of me hopes he will say - "structural damage will affect integrity of vehicle so we are writing it off" I assume this is an option? If metal bent out of shape then if it is straightened again is it as strong??

The majority of the cost must be labour as new parts will only run to doors and trim from my limited view point and time on the jig.

I believe (possibly incorrectly) that the FL2 is a monocoque design.

So I would guess that if there is damage to the structure then it may be a right-off.

But please don't take this as an official or legal statment.

I am also led to believe that most side on impacts (such as yours) do generally damage the structure. Just have to wait and see. I think cars are generally design to crumple to protect the occupants. 2002 Honda VFR800

You have to ask yourself whether you will be comfortable being in your FL2 when its been repaired?

GAP insurance is worth its weight in gold. I once had a Vectra V6 company car which I managed to write off on the motorway without hitting anything other than the central crash barrier twice. Simont, you are correct the freelander 2 is a monocoque, where as the D3/4 has land rovers integrated body frame a monocoque body on top off a ladder frame chassis. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

DP600 dual-phase steel is used for A-posts, side sills , cantrails etc. This is a very strong steel, so should hold up well to side impacts. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

It took some serious impact - and it still bent!!

The independent assessor has now signed off costs so repairs have started and parts ordered. No date yet for completion - they will only fully know what needs doing when it is stripped. A phone call next week should give some indication of when I can expect it back.

The problem I have is that the insurers are not writing it off so Gap doesn't come into it. At the moment the decision isn't mine to take.

I'm not accepting the car back unless its 110% - I don't want to be stuck with a lemon. I'm expecting replacment stickers in door shuts etc - So you wouldn't guess it had been repaired. The Co-op and insurer guarantee the reapirs for 5 years.

I assume the beauty of an APP deal is that I can hand it back and walk away in another 18 months if the worst case happens.

Does anyone have any experience of how a bump like this affects your residuals?? There's always a way forward!

I got very badly hit in a Toyota Carina E back in the 90s. It was six weeks old when the accident happened. I was shunted up the back by a tosser on his phone, then thrown sideways into the path of a lorry doing about 50 mph. Luckily he threw me into the left hand ditch and I got away without a scratch. I thought the car was a write-off but as it was so new they decided to repair it and I was very worried. It came back looking brand new and drove perfectly - so keep your fingers crossed. Without wishing to teach you to suck eggs, when you get it back besides the obvious visual check you will need to drive it for a good distance checking handling, braking in a straight line etc and even after that you need to watch out for even tyre wear. Also, and this sounds a bit odd, get a mate to drive behind you and see how it looks, level etc. All a PITA but worth doing.

Latest update :

Major repairs underway - Expect car to be out of paintshop no earlier than 22/7 and then a further week to put it all back together. This is dependent on no other damage being found, parts turnng up on time and job not taking longer than estimated. Could be ready by 29/7.....


The only problem is I'm on holiday in France over this time - So it looks like the journey is going to be done in the hire car - providing I can negotiate it - Insurer is willing but hire company want other assurances. Other issue is that if my car is ready they expect me to collect it and hand back hire car - bit difficult when I'm 900 miles away and it will be with me........ No way Am I driving back from France to collect mine then driving back again.

I feel a fight coming on....... Now where is my ambulance chaser?????

they have seen sense - told them I was OK with them collecting the car and dropping mine off at their costs and the address.

They are now covering the journey and the costs of storing ine till i get back. TBH I'm not bothered who pays as long as it isn't me.

I didn't really want to do the journey in another car but as mine won't be ready I have no choice. At least it will be in a Feely so I suppose I should eb happy that I'm putting miles on someone else car???

The speed of the ambulance chaser is to be seen (Not) they are still chasing who is liable even thought I've had it in writing over a week....... and chasing medical reports for any of my injuries which I'm not aware of. All I need them to do is operate under my instruction but they seem to make work hard for themselves. No wonder insurance costs are so high.
