Noisy Turbo - Help!

Had the F2 SD4 Sport LE now for a couple of months.

Sure this has been discussed here in the past

I am finding the whistle from the turbo is unbearable.
Been in contact with dealer and Landrover direct.
Told its a characteristic of the car.
Funny can't remember seeing that in the brochure!
Landrover direct told me that it was acceptable to turn the stereo up!

I cant believe it.
Going up a slight incline is like torture.

Help.

Please tell me there is a fix!

My turbo does whistle a bit but no to loud, all turbos if on petrol or diesel engines will whistle thats the nature of Turbo charging.

From reading other recent Forum posts, it seems that it's a characteristic of recent vehicles only; there seems to have been a recent change in the specification, and / or supplier, of the turbocharger.

I had a new SD4 auto on loan for three days whilst my 2008 TD4 auto was in for a sorting. The SD4 had 2000 miles on the clock and due to the fact there has been lots of complaints about noisey turbos I had a good listen but never heard any whistle from inside the cabin, with radio off and blower speed on two ! If I put the drivers window down and drove between narro buildings i could hear a faint whistle. I must also add that my hearing is very good and would soon detect a noisy turbo.

I would suggest that if you can hear the turbo from inside the cabin iether the turbo is noisey or there is a bung missing in the bulkhead, or a steering colomb rubber seal is out of place, I would be looking under those pedals to see where the noise is coming in ! as the turbo is right below your drivers feet ! This is where I suspect the problem lies but something the dealers would never think off ! as there is excuse for everything is they all do it !
It may mean putting a smoke pellet near the turbo and shining a torch around the pedal area to see if any smoke appears or shinning a very bright light in the back of the engine bay at night and glancing around the pedal area, but sure this is where you need to concentrate on. Very Happy

Example
My Neighbour bought a brandnew Almera auto ! they said was noisey ! went back to the dealer over 20 times in three years and was told nothing wrong ! Just as it was due to run out of warranty they asked me to take a look and under the carpet in the passanger footwell there was a tiny grommet missing allowing all the noise of the autobox to echo up into the car ! Fitted a grommet and the car was 100%.

Hey OG I think you might be on the button there - I borrowed a eD4 which I thought had a really noisy turbo (compared to mine) and it sounded as though there was less insulation or a hole through the bulkhead! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Thanks Cpt
It only takes a tiny hole or gap around a component to allow huge amounts of noise in ! due to the fact that with the bonnet shut the turbo noise gets exagerated as it echo's around the engine bay like a bake bean can.
What would be good now is for someone with a noisey one to find where the noise is getting in.

Personally I would put a smoke pellet in a double floored tin ( to stop heat damage from bottom of tin ) in the engine bay by the drivers side drive shaft, easy to get to from behind front wheel and shut the car up with one window slightly down with a vacum cleaner attachment through the window and a towel to seal up the rest of the window. Run the vacum cleaner and if there is a slight leak between the bulhead and the engine bay smoke will enter the cabin. Heater falp needs to be on recirculation. Then get a contortionist to stick their head down by the pedals with a torch and see where the smoke is entering !
I reckon it will be well worth while ! There may be a common denominator like a bolt missing or grommet or seal where the brake servo mounts, or seal around the steering colomb ! or even a grommet misfit for a wiring loom. Thumbs Up

well bigalf1962, the loan car I had was a 2011 model year with the new engine in an XS spec with 2000 miles and there was no turbo whistle from inside the car ! outside there was but inside there was none and I used it for three day and covered fair few miles with it !
If I really listen hard I can just hear the whistle form my TD4 auto but it doesnt intrude into the cabin noise.

Just got back from Dealership
Was informed that Land Rover recognise this issue but offer no fix at present.

Dealership have been good and understanding, but don’t offer anything.

Writing letter to Land Rover UK now to see what the way forward is.

Past discussions with Land Rover UK have been pointless.

They said it was ok to have to turn up the volume to drown out the noise in the past!

Gutted, as I know this is now going to be an ongoing nightmare.
New cars shoud be an enjoyable experience.

Options are:

1. Wait and see a reply from Land Rover UK for fix.
2. Look into rejecting – would be gutted as I love it otherwise.

I have owned over 35 cars now and have never come across Turbo as noisy as this!
