No, this isn't right.

The original TD4 engine in the Freelander 2 has always been a Ford/Peugeot/Citroen design. The BMW unit was used in the Freelander 1. Although people often refer to it as a "Peugeot Citroen engine", it is built to Land Rover specification, by Ford, in Dagenham.

The TD4e was simply a tweak of the same design for greater fuel economy and lower emissions.

Not to be confused with the new, 2WD only, eD4.

I've got a TD4_e. Get on with it just fine.

I average around 39-40mpg with normal day to day driving, on a long motorway run I can get it up to 44-45mpg, once I did get 48mpg (that was hard working driving so careful).

Start/stop works well, never had any issues, it only kicks in if certain conditions are met. There is debate whether its good / bad for the engine all the stopping and starting, and are the parts up to extra work. Mine is coming up to 2years and still going strong. Some people on here have had issues.

Doesn't the FL2 excluding the new SD4/TD4 for the 2011MY onwards, have all the same engines? The TD4_e just has the stop-start feature. 2010MY Freelander 2 HSE Auto

It seems that Stop - Start was introduced with the TD4e and then it was renamed the TD4 again! Rolling Eyes

The starter motor etc is heavy duty to cope with the stop start business. I find the system excellent and it's nice to have the engine cut out in traffic. The tax difference is good too, £115 for 6 months as opposed to £145 for the auto. I think MY11 is even cheaper. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Belgium 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Santorini Black

Have a TD4_e, one of the first to be produced (april 2009). Never had an issue with it.

I specifically made a deal with the dealer for it being an _e as I ordered end of january and they were only starting production in march 2009. They strengthened some items to cope with the more start/stops so wanted the better parts.

Done +76000 kms (approx 50000 miles) now and still very happy.

Only had minor issues like sunroof-mesh, car seats etc, all fixed under warranty but never anything major or technical. Most issues I would have fixed myself if not under warranty, but liked tha fact they replaced it rather then fix it.

Only issue is the clutch which in heavy duty situations the auto is better. But then again only get in those situations on LR trips like LR-day. If you are planning to get really off-road go for the auto.

Especially in fall and winter the car is amazing:
In fall when driving on muddy fields when going to local football games. While other are spinning you drive like you're on tarmac.
In winter in heavy snow, when others are driving 5mps/hr you blow by like it's summer.

Iow don't go for the 2x4 you'll be making yourself rediculous when bad weather comes. especially with the winters we're having these last few years.
