I must say i have found this topic to be very interesting, there has been valid post about the xenon conversions, I for one am glad it has been discussed, I never knew that the conversion kits are available.

I do think that all the question had a valid response, from both sides of the coin, brian27 seems to know what he is talking about and I trust his judgement, but saying that i have also taken on board the other responses.

I have emailed a retailer and asked the question on heat and plastic lenses

Quote:
Thank you for your email.

We have fitted Xenon light to vehicles like Renault, Mercedes, Vauxhall and many other with plastic headlight.
And we had no issues about 'melting plastic headlights'.

Kind regards,
Marius Cepulis

Though I still have a few unanswered queries on the legality issues raised and what would happen on its first MOT, and also the warrentry issue by converting the lamps to xenon?

I'm not saying i will not change in the furture, but might head toward the Osram replacement bulbs first,

Thanks everyone Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

npinks, on the MOT aspect it is not something that an inspector has the ability to check, and from my time spent on Audi forums the guys have never had any issues with their cars failing MOT's with a xenon conversion.

Interesting topic this! Regardless of whether the conversion works or ends up setting fire to your vehicle etc Big Cry one point seems to be missing. It may be that drivers with Xenon lamps feel they can see further but they are bl**dy nuisance with the dazzle they create especially in wet conditions.
On a similar theme has anyone experienced the same problem with the newer high intensity blue flashing lamps fitted to most police highway unit cars (at least in Greater Manchester) these days. I find they can be a hazard on poorly lit road when they are the scene of an incident.
Perhaps its just an age thing!! D3 GS Java Black TDV6 Manual

Question
Can anybody enlighten me (forgive the pun) on the difference between a xenon conversion and a xenon bulb (like in this eBay auction http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XENON-H7-MAX-VISION-...ViewItem)?
Cheers

Those are no Xenon bulbs but so called "xenon style" 12 V bulbs. Xenon conversion should be a modification to high tension bulbs. You can read all in detail overhere:

Thanks Paul
Here is what I found most useful in that entry....

Quote:
The arc light source in an HID headlamp is fundamentally different from the filament light source used in tungsten/halogen headlamps. For that reason, HID-specific optics are used to collect and distribute the light. Installing HID bulbs in headlamps designed to take filament bulbs results in improperly-focused beam patterns and excessive glare, and is therefore illegal in almost all countries.

So I have now given up the after-market xenon conversion bug..... as Steve H says the Xenons can be a "bl**dy nuisance with the dazzle they create", esp. the after-market conversions.

From the (limited) research I've done xenons must be self levelling and include a wash capability to be legal. They are definitely much better (wife's Ford has them), not so good if you happen to be driving towards them! Andrew

That's correct, but I know quite a few guys in the UK running around with them without these items and passing MOT's without issue (as I would expect, because MOT inspectors don't need to check it I think).

They make a world of difference when driving, especially on long night trips where they keep your eyes from getting tired....I find.

Getting a little bit better weather and i am re looking at what to do with the headlamps

Going to get LED side lights for the crisper side light.

I think i am going for the cheaper option of the Osram Nightbreakers for the headlamps instead of the Xenon Conversion though.

Today I thought i would look at the lights themselves and they look to have two H7 lamps in each headlamp. Confused

Ones the normal riving at night main beam and ones the full on main beam with the little blue light on the dash.

Do I change them both to Osram Nightbreakers or just the normal driving lamps Question

Cheers on the help in advance

Nick

PS Do you change both bulbs on the HID conversions Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

as far as led side lights the ones i tried did'nt work they just flashed very fast im told its to do with the hz rating on the fl2 and a couple of other cars on the market
if i was fitting nightbreakers i would do both dipped and main beam but if using xenon i just do dipped beam due to extra wiring and cost
you will find any bulbs your looking for herehttp://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/home.php 2007 fl2 narvik black ,chrome mirrors, side steps, tinted windows,20" kahn wheels,6000k xenon conversion, black leather, garmin nuvi satnav, silver vision indicator bulbs, clear side repeaters.
