My friends in the business also tell me that the replacement Defender will have mobile detachable chicken coops, the ability to attach an Olympic Ski jumping slope (to Swiss standards naturally) and directional stability control developed in conjunction with Barcelona FC (Chief engineer is apparently a chap caled Messi).
It also, has a suggested anti caravan device whereby it detects the swear words muttered by following motorists and steers the car automaticaly into the nearest layby.

All info avaiable in Auto Express I'm told.

With respect Athelstan (note correct spelling Smile ) your source has a rather clouded view and knowledge!

There are no plans to produce the old X type. In fact none of the tooling exists anymore let alone any agreement with Ford to utilise the Mondeo platform as I understand it.Thumbs Up

My comments relating to India referred specifically to Jaguar and not LR. My source was commenting purely on Jaguar not LR. Indeed the dies and presses for the old X Type were shipped out of the UK to India in Q1 2010 in preparation for body panel pressings of that model to serve the Indian domestic market. That is what I've been told by my source. If subsequently he is wrong then so be it but I take his comments in good faith as a) I've known him for a very long time, and b) he is usually very well informed.

I will at the next opportunity ask him about LR model plans.

The recent very good news relating to the sales and profit performance of the JLR unit of Tata Motors was most welcomed news however they are not as bright as they first appear.

Not seeking to downplay the official statement it is recognized within the company that the profits achieved are in part inflated (possibly by as much as a third) due to the weakness of the GBP£ against the currencies of its major export markets. This situation may not continue as the UK economy recovers and the GBP£ strengthens against that very same basket of currencies. Secondly, internally (since the departure of Ford) significant gains in productivity and purchasing efficiencies have played a key part in this turnaround, but when benchmarked against its premium brand rivals more needs to be done as JLR is still not best-in-class in these disciplines. Finally, future environmental compliance legislation and its associated tax increments may make it more difficult for JLR to sustain sales growth in their present "traditional" markets. These issues are highlighted in internal memorandum and are being addressed. Successfully I hope - for the sake of UK industry and its jobs.

Finally, Tata Motors acknowledge that the performance of its own branded auto business has some significant challenges that need to be urgently addressed as these are imposing upon the investment plans relating to JLR, not least of which is the under performing "peoples car". The Tata auto unit is currently loss making business.

After your comments I sent an email to my friend and he has sent a swift brief reply as follows:

1: X Type project was stalled due to local competitive market conditions prompting a rethink. But not dead.
2: FL2 was first off the line in Pune May 27th. 100 units shipped so far to the current just 2 JLR Indian dealerships.
3: Prices - Rs33.89 TD4 SE Auto Rs.38.00 SD4 HSE Auto.
4: JLR sold in India last year over 800 units. These consisted of XK, XJ, XF, Discovery and RR.

He apologized for not keeping me current re the progress or otherwise of the X Type project, and, I apologize for deciphering his comments re the Pune plant now producing vehicles as referring to his earlier communiques re the small Jaguar.

I have replied to his latest email stating that if he's not careful he'll get an "Auto Express" journalistic reputation.

Athelstan,

I undersatnd what you are trying to say but at the moment your comments on this are not only fundamentally wrong but misleading.

As far as I am aware, there has never been a plan to produce X types in India, be it by ground up build or knock down reassembly.

The profits generated by JLR are true and yes do take advantage of current forex rates but you cannot for one second deride this publication of accounts as inaccurate as you imply. Many other companies have also enjoyed this same said fortune of the market movements.

What matters is that it is cash in the bank ( something Switzerland is good at) and there is no false reporting ( something Switzerland is not good at) which can only mean good news. Further, if you take out these favourable rates, JLR still made a good profit.

I cannot see the point of your post with regards to this matter only to try and defend the fact that your sources are ill informed and you believe it!!

Well all I can say from reading your latest post is that, as an English gentleman, I will have to agree to disagree. And that I have personally known my friend for over 20yrs (Senior Automotive Investment Analyst - London) and can vouch for his integrity. He would not deliberately misled anyone.

I have not derided the accounts as inaccurate or stated that they are the result of false accounting. Those were your words not mine.

What I did say was to report that there are a number of fundamental underlying reasons why the figures are not as bright as they first appear - in the same way that many analysts and media did so following the JLR's release of this data - and, that unless those underlying factors are addressed then this excellent performance will cannot be sustained. I do not want the company to regress to the recent bad old days of 2007 when the unit sold only 50,000 Land Rovers and just 15,700 Jaguars.

Finally, why have you found it necessary to focus on the Swiss and Switzerland in your reply? I know of no reason why either that nation or its citizens have made any negative input to the management of JLR or Tata.

This thread was launched re the Jaguar Cross-Over, it has panned out to discuss the future model ambitions of JLR and its production facilities. Let's keep it that way and not enter into a thinly veiled attack on any one nation or its citizens.

(apology for late edit - my ISP is having difficulties this morning that manifest itself in very slow web refreshment times)
