Germany 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey
"Golden Steering Wheel"

In Germany the United Press - now for some years- conducts an annual vote of motorsport-professionals, automobile-technicians and prominent citicens of the best new cars introduced in Germany, called "Golden Steering Wheel"
The Landrover Freelander has been ranked no. 3 in the category "SUV & FWD" next to VW Tiguan as no. 1 and the new BMW X5 as no. 2.
The respected jury has commented that ".... the new Freelander 2 shows all signs of becoming a bestseller, even though it is "only" placed as no. 3 in the "Golden Steering Wheel" vote. The noble Brit shines in Design, Build Quality, Ride Quality and Engine". Any comparison with the Freelander 1 is out of place and impossible.

There was a comparison in Auto Bild among BMW X3 and the LR freelander 2 and the BMW won. The Fl2 lost mainly because of poor brakes:

FL2:
- from 100 to 0 km/h:
- cold: 40.5 m.
- hot: 41.5

X3:
- cold 37.7
- hot: 37.5

Over 40 meters seems long way for a smodern and expensive car.

Well!

A few months back (September i think it was) we were in the buying moode for a new car. Two of the cars we were looking at (yes you are right: X3 and FL2) were among the cars we concidered. We wanted to take these two (ands two others) for a real test.

Test 1: Really bad roads.
We got a concussion in our heads driving the X3, while FL2 where more like floating over the bumps & humps & dumps&...., -well, a really bad road. This manouver the FL2 won souvereignly.

Score: FL2-X3: 1-0.

Next: on the Motorway. Testing how the cars layed at 100andXXX kms/h on the motorway. (i.e.: severly above speedlimit). X3 was lying as a solid mountain on the motorway. So was FL2. Both had adequate axcelleration..
But FL2 was sovereign on comfort.

Score: FL2-X3: 2-0.

Last test: 3 rounds full speed ahead through a roundabout. We anticipated that this would be a cruel and sovereign win to X3. It was a draw. To our big surprice.

Final score: FL3-X3: 3-1.

Winner is: FL2.

Absolutely no doubt. Actually, Hyundai Santa Fe we concidered more of a competitor to FL2 than the X3.

But motorjournalists; I guess they feel they have an obligation to write nice words about the X3. Hard suspension, no comfort, but OK looking. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

I would go also for the FL2, I don't even like the looks of the X3...and hate it's ride quality.

What about interior quality? I have compared the two in this and I find some plastics in the FL2 feel cheap (like on the top of the centre console...or between the front seats, on some plastic parts where they connect there were sharp edges.

My biggest concern that still holds me, and makes me look in such reviews and comparisons (as mentioned above) is quaility and reliability. I will wait to see if the complaints with this reduce Smile

It would also be interesting to see how much more the X3 would cost if you brought both cars to the same spec/ equipment level...................... I think the F2 would win that one by quite a margin. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Scotland 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 Dynamic Auto Indus Silver

VW gets the vote of the German press. Fiat 500 gets the vote of the Italian press. Land Rover gets the 4x4 of the year in the British press (and rightly so).
Whistle
hhhmmm. Out with the old (2007 SE)
In with the new (2012 Dynamic with everything). Now also gone.
