Caravan going

Well after a lifetime of caravanning I have decided to sell the van.
I only used it twice last year and the same the year before, and the year before that so it just doesn't make economic sense. Should I now sign up for the anti caravan lobby or just let common sense prevail.

You are making sense. Put the proceeds of the van sale into a term deposit and holiday in cabins, B&B's, motels etc on the proceeds of the interest you earn. I own a Tourist Park & I can't get over the wally's who are happy to spend half a million on a massive RV and then complain about the costs of an overnight stay on a powered site. They just dont get it. At 5% interest (I currently pay 9% on a business loan), a $300K rig (large 4WD and caravan or motorhome) generates $15K per year or, over a 3 month holiday period, $167 per day. We are the most expensive in town at $27 per day - go figure!
In the meantime, those who still have the $300K RV's are spending all their time lobbying local councils for "free" parking areas whilst burning up in excess of $300 per day on depreciation. It's very clear, USE IT or LOSE IT and if you do use t, enjoy it. It's a lifestyle thing. Twice a year doesn't seem worth it, unless you are doing laps of the UK each trip and it takes 2 months each time! Here in Oz, a lap can take 2 years and you can follow the good weather the whole time.

I said at the start of this year if we don't use the caravan more it will have to go, had 20+ days away so far, got another 10 at the end of the month, a fortnight in July and a few weekend booked after

So it looks like it might be staying a little longer Laughing Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Here lies the catch with caravaning; don't you find that the fixed annual costs are such that you have no choice but to spend all your holiday time in it to justify those costs? Rolling Eyes

No not really, though through the winter months when it's stored away and unused due to cold and kids I do think the money could put me on a beach Laughing

And there's Not many places you can have 40+ days away for a familiy of 4 for less than a grand Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

But you have paid 10k for a van and 30k for the car, you could go on holiday for two years with that money!

The car would have been bought anyway so you can't count that Rolling Eyes and the caravan was £14k Whistle

for a 2 week in eygpt it would cost me £3200 I get a few more days away and can still go to Egypt if I wanted Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
