I have a witter fixed height tow bar with twin electrics. It is witter dedicated electrics which just plug into the land rover sockets. Then got dealer to reprogram car to recognise kit. Cost about 350 ish for toward and electrics and 50 for dealer to program. Properly programmed it does the simple things like flashing trailer on dash and only turning front parking sensors on when using sensors but i think it does more important things like set up ESP (electronic stability control) and RSC (role stability control) specifically for towing. I'll take a pic tomorrow and show u my set up. Went for fixed height to add protection to exhaust when off road. Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

thanks for the info and picture Ed, useful information for me.

the wiring loom, Witter or Landrover..........where do they actually plug in ? ie where are the Landrover sockets ?
and are they actually just sitting there to receive a loom ?

regarding the dedicated wiring loom, would a Witter and a Landrover loom be the same ? it's just that the towbar place I phoned said it would be £200 more for a dedicated Landrover wiring loom, and this was something else that puzzled me.

also re fitting the electrics, is it straightforward ?

Have you got the sizes etc I think I will make one myself.

The alternative neater soloution for offroading.

I fitted the bar & electrics myself, I took the rear bumper off to do the cuting, its not a hard job, the electric kit just plugs in to the appropriate connectors, I havn't had anything programmed, the trailer warning light on the dash works, I turn the parking sensors off with the switch on the dash

I fitted this towbar, its what Landrover fit but is branded Brink/Thule.

I had the Landrover bar fitted £ 350 at the dealer including genuine landrover electrics. I have since had the electrics changed to the single 13 pin euro socket at the L/Rover dealer. so simple and quick now to hitch up van.
I still have a Landrover electric twin pack complete if anyone wants one £ 50.00 Cost 231 new.

I do have an issue with my bar knocking due to faulty attachment but this is going to be changed on the service next month. I dont have any problems with the reverse sensors with my Detachable.

Sorry - Oldgeezer make sure the new swan neck attachment you get has the numbers 215 stamped on the top of the ball area, anything other than that is not to the latest specification

I don't have a buzzer, the traler warning light on the dash flashes when the indicators work, you need to remove the nearside trim panel in the boot to plug in the electrics, you have to be bold when removing the clipped in fasteners, I think you have to remove the seatbelt anchorage as well, I didn't break any clips and everything went back as it came off.  What if there were no hypothetical situations?

what's the differences between a dedicated wiring loom and one that isn't ?

also when and where is a bypass relay used/needed ?

sorry for so many questions but I like to know a wee bit about the installation before taking the plunge !!
