2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black
Delay with engine whilst changing gear

Hope I can describe this ok, there is no problem while changing gear as you would driving at normal speeds, but I have found that when I set off quite quickly and change gear quickly there seems to be a delay with the engine, like, I change gear quickly and put my foot back on the accelerator but the engine doesn't respond for aprrox a second. I have a manual, and when I have had dealer freelanders in the past, again manuals they too seem to have this delay. Is this normal or is it ME? Whistle

Sounds normal to me. Good old turbo lag. Doesn't happen so much if you build the revs a little higher before changing up.

I think the lag is great when I am joining the very small A38 slip road near me. I went around the corner in 3rd at about 25mph and put my foot down. The bloke in the focus zetec was thinking he would get past me the moment we were on the A38 but as soon as the turbo kicked in I was gone. He looked a little surprised Laughing LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Just as an added tip, pull away from standing with the TR in sand mode. Brilliant for quicker getaways. I think it changes the throttle response and also puts the power down quicker. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Cheers Thumbs Up The delay is more noticeable when I have my foot down. Its like I change to quick for the car to keep up. I have heard about using sand mode for a quicker response when setting off, though I've never tried it.

Try it mate. It's funny how much quicker it puts the power down. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

^ beat me to it.... get an auto and it keeps it on boost so no lag!

As for the throttle lag I have read a lot of people complain of this problem on a lot of cars - and apparently (if you believe what you read) it is actaully programmed to do this so as to avoid over reving the engine during a change... I'm not sure how much I believe this and I cant find the article now but sounds feasible... This and turbo lag is going to make it feel like a delay but then if you what a spirited drive, keep the revs up during the change matching engine speed to road speed and then drop the clutch and you should be able to avoid this... hard to do but rewarding, especially when driving manual diesels Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

The auto doesn't have this because you don't have to lift off the throttle to change gear. The lag is no big deal anyway.

Auto makes it boring not having to change gear Yawn and if you want to make swift progess this could mean deploying the dreaded kick down.

You made a wise choice with the manual box lad, more involving which is how it should be Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Or push lever left, select most appropriate gear and floor it, making better faster progress with no lag or delay and without having to move your left leg Wink Thumbs Up Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Came the time I bought my FL2, when I picked it up the Sales guy was keen to demonstrate to me all the features that he could in an hour ...

... he said if you ever feel the need to get a new set of tyres use 'sand' mode at traffic lights for a week or so! Rolling with laughter Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

If you buy an auto leave it in D unless off roading useage requires the manual mode. Using commandshift on the road is as good as admitting you should have bought a proper manual. I fully accept the auto has no lag but I am not bothered. The lag is quite amusing sometimes as per my above post and the gear change itself is fine and dandy. I like the involvement. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

buy an auto because 99% of the time I will leave it in D and it suits the car much better. Use the command shift when I need it and so I still have some control..

if you want involvement - buy a manual in the small low sports car with a big engine so i can drive it like it should.. Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Couldn't disgree more. Manual suits the FL2 as its not massive like a disco. Perfect box. I love driving it and the short throw is great. As above, wise choice lad. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
