Netherlands 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Santorini Black

Hi,

I did remove the sensor which was very easy. The tip of the sensor was slightly damaged/worn out. This was probably caused by the broken drive belt I had about 2 months ago due to a broken/stuck belt tensioner on the alternator. I ordered a new sensor and replaced it and since 3 weeks no more jolting so far Thumbs Up !

Thanks for the good hints!

Richard

This advice is really helpful and spot on! I experienced the issue twice the first time the dealer replaced the sensor the second time and most recent I took the wheel off cleaned the sensor and reinstalled it- no issues for two months now. Thanks!

Had this symptom a few times. Whilst I changed my wheels last night I removed the sensor and gave it a quick clean. It didn't seem that dirty but time will tell. Might have to try a new one if it happens again.

When I last cleaned mine it didn't seem dirty at all. I think the process of removing and reseating plays a part. I still haven't had the issue re-occur. Good Luck mate!

Well nearly one month since I cleaned the sensor and this morning I had the first repeat performance. The jolt was very much more shuttle than before but it happened. I am now thinking fit a new sensor. It was happening two thre times a week so cleaning it did sort it. Funny but it happened the day after I had been off road across some flooded fields. Wonder if there is a connection ?

Thanks for your responses, I feel better knowing that this may be a more know about fault!

That said, it was the worst it's ever been today, had a number of jolts and on one the car lost power for a couple of seconds and the warning "Reduced Engine Performance" came up for the first time. This was on a busy motorway doing 70, rev counter dropped by 300rpm and suddenly lost a bit of speed because of this. Taking it easy with the car now until it's resolved!

I normally use a local land rover specialist mechanic to service my car, but with a problem like this i'm not sure if they'll have the technical know how particularly if it's to do with a drive chain sensor or if it needs a software update etc as they are more used to fixing older LRs. At the same time my local LR dealer wants £180 just to look at my car and this doesn't guarantee they'll diagnose the problem! Might have to take the hit and go to LR....

Hi, I had this - it was the crankshaft sensor. The sensor was replaced and its been fine since.

Crankshaft Position Sensor

I have a 2007 Freelander 2 GS manual that has covered about 140,000 miles. Since about 100,000 miles the engine has occasionally hesitated/juddered around the 2000 rpm mark. I noticed that if I go through deep water it makes it worse. The problem got worse and eventually the engine gave the Reduced Engine Performance message and completely stopped. If I let the engine cool for 20 minutes it would restart. RAC man did a diagnostics and the most likely message was an error from the crankshaft position sensor. He also cleared all the errors which seemed to allow me to drive a bit further although still some judder.

Ordered new crankshaft position sensor BRITPART for £20 then followed the instructions on forum ie remove drivers wheel and the front part of the wheel arch inner to gain access. Fairly simple task to replace. Car has been perfect now for over 1000 miles - no sign of a judder.

I can tell you how good this 1 thread has been to read.... I have spent the last 6 hours on this, been to 1 garage and land rover parts department, had my head under the bonnet for an hour and still could not even find the location of said sensor. websites are showing 2 different types too...

who would have known to take the wheel off??

Thanks for the help, I can now go to bed and sleep with peace of mind I know what to do tomorrow

Just to revive an old thread. I did have random jolting and the occasional REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE message on screen.
On occasions, the engine stalled only to restart easily.

On closer inspection, I found that the CKP sensor wires were chaffing against the engine, where it is secured by cable ties just above the sensor plug. Apparently the wiring from above was stretched too tightly resulting in chaffing.

This forum is amazing. My car did exactly this earlier today, but I couldn't get it started again, so was towed to the garage by the AA. My mechanic scratched his head so we had a look on here. My car now has a new crankshaft sensor and is running as sweetly as before. Thank you!

Edited to add - and it only cost me £80 😀

Dammit. I spoke too soon. My Freelander got me through a 70 mile round trip this morning, but then the fault happened again as I was driving locally. Having said that, it just conked out quietly at low revs and without the previous jolting. All I had done in the interim was to have it cleaned, so perhaps water had got in to the sensor. Back to the garage on Monday 😟

Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread?

My mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with my 08 Freelander today. He drove it twice but nothing happened. He plugged it in to the computer which only showed the engine underperformance messages which he cleared, although he did mention something about the ECU. I am really worried that the engine is going to cut out on the motorway. Is there anything else we should be looking at? Any advice would be gratefully received.
