Windy Roof Rails?

I drive a 2010 FL2 Sport which came with the roof rails and cross bar already fitted. I do not have a sunroof.

I have noticed that when driving along the motorway then anything > 55mph causes a noticeable increase in wind noise. It seems to be coming from the back where the cross bar is and I can only describe it as a howling noise?

This is generally worse on very windy days but it still can be heard when in 'normal' conditions and it's driving me insane.

Do I remove the cross bar and roof rails to cure the problem? (what will I need to replace them with to cover any mounting holes, etc)

Or does anyone have a clever way of suppressing the noise?

Thanks

have to say i feel pretty well placed to answer this one

i have a freelander with roof rails, fitted at my request for canoeing trips and roofbox etc.

my dad has a freelander with no roofrails.

Mine is definitely a bit noisier but i wouldnt say its terrible. Considering the wind noise from the rest of the car, especially the windscreen and wing mirrors I dont think it is a particulalry proportionately large increase in noise. I guess it is what you get used to.

It is worse compared at higher speeds say over 75 but i dont find the difference too noticeable at lower speeds.

If the noise if annoying you and you rarely need to put anything on the roof I would recommend getting shot of the bars if thats do-able.

removed my cross bar for this very reason.

You need nothing except the tools for the job.

Do a "search" on here and you'll see in detail the simple solution to the problem. No need to remove roof rails - they can be very useful.

Don't ask me to provide the link - I'm hopeless at IT.

It doesn't matter how god or bad tyou are at IT, the search is so poor it takes ages to find anything. Just typed in roof rails and got 882 results, the first 2 pages only had 2 relating!!

I entirely agree.

FreeL2 has the worst search facility of other vehicle websites I use in the motorcycle world and I don't understand why. If others using the same software architecture can provide a better intuitive search facility with improve "refine" features why is it not possible here? But as I said - I'm hopeless at IT that's why I do notice the improvement elsewhere.

The same can be said for the "image uplaod" facility. Here it is tortuous compared to its peers.

Try putting in exactly what you are looking for i.e. roof rails noise but enter it as roof +rails +noise you only 27 entries Thumbs Up

If you enter it as roof rails noise you will pull up all threads containing those words i.e. roof rail and noise even if ir was a rear wheel bearing or a sun roof Thumbs Up

Or you might even get the weather forecast too.

Well, I ended up just putting up with it. In fact I went and bought some LR cross bars then at least I get some use out of the raised roof rails & cross brace.

Is it possible to just remove the cross brace but keep everything else on??

Just need a box now!

1) Having looked at the first link, that is for a Slide Rail Ski Carrier which seems a little different to my Raised Roof Rails & Cross Brace kit. But I see there is something about rubber seals?

2) The 2nd link seems more useful..I'll check for any gaps along the Cross Brace but I have to say I haven't noticed any to date.

Just to say I didn't fit these as they came with the motor when I bought it. So not sure what tools are needed if any adjustments are needed :-/

Both links will provide you with essential data to silence any noise you are experiencing from up above head. Read through the whole of both threads - not just my two postings that I alerted you to in those web links!

The LR ski racks fit onto the LR raised roof rails and LR cross bar acts simply as a stabiliser for the whole configuration. I hope you have many "silent" miles of FL2 motoring.[/b]
