Breaks squeaking

Hi all,

When breaking it sounds like I'm strangling a large mouse! any ideas on how I can get round this problem?

Dealer looked into it when I had my first service but could find nothing wrong! Rolling Eyes

Cheers Smile

Could be pads not sitting properly and vibrating, one solution is to put copper slip on the back of the pads before fitting; this may reduce the vibrating / squeaking

My brakes also squeak but only when reversing downhill. Never occurs at any other time. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

That's about the only time the rear brakes have to do much work as about 80% of the braking effort goes to the front brales in normal braking.

Brake squeel

Brake squeel often accours when a foreign object such as a small bit of grit etc gets in between the disc and friction material. Its usualy harmless and will go after a while once its worn away.
Some times a good pressure was will remove any debree but you could try a good quality brake cleaner.
Another reason for squeeling can be down to brake dust building up and leaving a glass like finninsh causing squeeling when braking.
If its bothering you yhat muc you can always take out the pads, use a little glass paper to slightly roughen the surface of all the pads and discs. This will uesualy get rid of the problem but remember to test brakes again. After all that it still might return again. hope this helps. Thumbs Up

lr pads have a reputation of having the lining separate from the back plate, this can cause the squeal, happened to mine recently and many others on here too At work

Squealing Back o/s wheel

May be a similar issue.
My Frelander has now done about 45k miles and after 30mins drive there is a horrible scraping squeal at all speeds from the off/side rear wheel. (wheel gets hotter than the others). If you pull the handbrake on hard it really squeals, goes quite if you brake, and hard turning left or right it goes quiet!

Its not dirt or bearings, been in the garage 3 times now, the current view is that the handbrake (a useless non effective item) has tiny pads on the inside of the drum and as not used much the rust build and heat expansion results in a slight rubbing. Have tried rubbing down /cleaning which has helped but not cured.

Any suggestion welcome.
P

Under warranty parts would not normaly be replaced unless faulty. Sounds like the discs and shoes need removing and cleaned up. If there is a rust lip build up it will need to be removed, the best tool for this would be a steel wire brush attachment that fits in a cordless drill.
This will remove any lip and clean the inside of the drum, either lightly roughen existing shoes or fit new ones followed by light braking to bed in brakes again.

okay okay we heard you the first time! Whistle

My 2011 SD4 has a rear brake squeak only when reversing and usually when coming to a stop. Thought nothing of it till now - is it anything to be concerned about?

I can lock the rear wheels on a dry road with my handbrake, so they arent useless if they are set up right.
