but as a non-emergency, what number are you guys using to call the police?

Crimestoppers, they will direct you to local force 0800 555 111.

I was tailgated through contraflow, the driver, in a mitsubishi pick up, was about 18 inch from my rear bumper, flashing, pipping and weaving about, average speed cameras were present so I stuck to 50.
At one point he swerved through the cones, undertook me, and re-joined the lane. I dialled crimestoppers and was called back within 5 minutes, the traffic officer requested my precise location and 20 minutes later an unmarked car came screamiong past.
The police called back, the driver was followed and stopped at Southwaite services, he was 3 times over the legal limit.

Ring the number, it does get a response.

Paul

Yeah I had the number programmed in so I could quickly dial using the Bluetooth system.

Just as a quick update on this story, the officer took a brief initial statement from me this morning and said he will contact the Mondeo driver and if he is willing to provide a statement then that will give them enough to start proceedings for dangerous driving or driving without due care in the alternative.

I also telephoned the haulage firm and spoke to the co-owner to complain about him. She said she knew who it was and would have words with him. He is Polish apparently. I passed this info on to the officer and he said he would follow it up with the haulage firm.

I just hope the Mondeo driver gets involved now so the cops can kick his ass. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Ah, those were the days Mr. Green

Now they've gone all hi-tech I have to go to all the effort of breaking in to the local plod compound and chaining their rear axles to a convenient bollard.

Crimestoppers, they will direct you to local force 0800 555 111.

But Crimestoppers are a charity and I would hate to be a party to overloading their workload, on their site they quote:
Quote:
Driving and vehicles
Contact your local Police directly with any of the following issues:

using a mobile phone while driving
speeding on the roads
not using seat belts when driving
bald tyres on a car
children not using booster seats.

The sooner the government rolls out a national number for non emergencies, the better.

I had never seen that before, I would think they have put that on the site due to the number of calls being made about the problem?

You are right a national number would be good, but then that too would get overloaded with airheads reporting people for having a "better" car than them.

hmm..problems problems

Concerning the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge mentioned in an earlier post as I understand it this road is now covered by average speed cameras with a 60mph limit, you would think that if the LGV's are the cause of so many incidents on this stretch and with them being limited to 56mph the authorities would have imposed a lower limit on this stretch. Confused

A14 is 50mph for any commercial vehicle over 7.5 ton. Interesting comment about the 40mph limit on single carrageway, I regularly stick to this and as many as 20% of cars that overtake me abuse me for sticking to the limit. One even rang my company to complain that I must be overloaded as I could only manage 40 on the A17 single carrageway. 2009 FL2 GS

It is surprising that some lorry driver still use hand held mobiles when driving, the penalties for a professional driver caught doing this are much heavier than car drivers,

The penalty for using a mobile phone is the same for any road user regardless off what they are driving, the only extra thing that can happen to a LGV driver is he can be reported to the traffic commissioner, who can suspend his LGV license for a period of time.
As for LGV drivers being any worse than any other road user, i would have to say that i have seen some unbelievably stupid things from ALL drivers regardless of what they drive. It is just when an LGV driver F**KS up it causes alot more damage.
The Doctor: As for the LGV driver being taken for Dangerous/ Driving without due care and attention, i very much doughty this will happen as all he will say is the mondeo was in his blind spot when he checked his mirrors. Again i very much doughty a report will be generated for his mobile phone usage, for two reasons 1: The mobile phone was not seized at the time of the offence so how do we know that is the phone he was using at the time ? can you describe the make and model of the phone ? ( the courts will ask this) 2: The simple reason it costs quite abit of money to check mobile records.
As the law stands at the moment the only real chance of getting a prosecution for using a mobile phone while driving is for the offender to be stopped at the time of the offence by the Police.

This is untrue, coach /bus and HGV driver can face a fine of upto £2500 where as car drivers only face upto £1000, here is a link

Very true but if LGV's are so dangerous on this stretch of road surely they would have made the limit lower whereas at the moment they can go through close to the limiter and allowing for 10% they can get through at 55 if they wanted to.
