Wimbledon Mystery

Looking at the purse for Wimbledon winners and losers yesterday I noticed that the men and women receive the same prize money (Winner £1,100,000 - runner-up £550,000 ) Whistle Prize Money

I remembered then, reading some time ago that this balance was due to some "equalilty" based EU legislation - not a binding requirement as such but applied as it was deemed to be 'fair'.

So, The Mystery! Why do the men have to play the best of 5 sets and the women only 3? Don't understand Shocked Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

It's called 'equality when appropriate' Whistle

I think it's to do with men being seen as stronger and having more stamina etc so they can cope with 5 sets. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

If it were true equality, there shouldn't be a men's and women's legue but just one league...

Interesting point. Thanks for the input everybody.

It just struck me that "Ladies' Day" (Saturday) the spectators don't seem to get equal value for money as "Men's Day" - there being a reduction in the potential for longer matches. Ah well, the way of the world. Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

I saw a documentary about Bjorn Borg yesterday on Belgian TV. The first time he won Wimbledon he earned £15000 in 1980 (if I'm correct). That should amount to about £45000 to £50000 I guess in todays valuation?

I think that's about the amount you get for loosing in the 4th round now.

Things have certainly changed...

Now don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to the current amounts: the more the top player makes, the more the bottom players make and the more people can make a living from it which in turn raises the standard.

I too am at a loss why the women get the same fee as men at Wimbles.

I have a neat way to readdress the balance tho... just deduct £100 each time they shriek and squeal when they hit the ball. Job done!

To be honest, joking aside, the "grunts" as they are called is the main reason I don't watch women's tennis any more. Shriekapova is one of the worst but now they are teaching young women to do it... ridiculous. It isn't necessary and should be clamped down upon and taken out of the game IMO.

Along with bouncing the ball upwards of 20 times before a serve... Oh! Sorry... perhaps I should stop now Whistle
