If your only looking at >10 miles a day why go for a small engine, fuel cost is going to be the least of your worries? Buy something nice, larger higher mileage cars are generally cheaper after a few years than smaller "cheap to run" shopping trolleys.

Dont worry - stearing well clear of micra's - despite their percieved japaneseness, since the french took them over they have suffered greatly from the french quality - especially in the engine department!!!! I'm completly with you on the big engine old car thing, although I dont think she is... She wants it to be a girly car and ideally not a diesel as it will just die wiith all the short trips.. The problem is that the laws of bangenomics say that whilst a big old car can be cheap for as long as it is working its fine, but when it does go wrong it invariably goes wrong big styly which then costs megga bucks, where as if you go for an old ford chances are it will plod along for an ever and a day and if it does go wrong it's likely to be a cheap part of one you can get from a breaker. Oh and alos insurance is also a factor - when you have a thousand pound car but insurance is 500 quid then it just does not stack up compared to a car that might cost 120quid a month but only 200 quid a yr in insurance. Simple maths tells me that without a break down the big old car will cost 5.5k over 3 yrs (incl. petrol, insurance & tax) (but carry the risk) where a small new car will cost me 5.7k over 3yrs like for like with no risk!!!!! That aside if paying out cash for a benger its got to be no more than 1200 - 1500 quid. Now if you've got some decent suggestions, I'm more than willing to give them ago..?? Maybe we need a new thread SOTW (Shed of the Week) for those who dont know!!!!!
