If your only looking at >10 miles a day why go for a small engine, fuel cost is going to be the least of your worries? Buy something nice, larger higher mileage cars are generally cheaper after a few years than smaller "cheap to run" shopping trolleys.
Our next second car will be a post 2002 FL1 - fuel cost will be marginally higher, and after 2002 most of the nasty surprises were sorted.
Stay away from Micras, ours 2003, 28Kmiles, multiple sensor failures, timing chain!, central locking module, auxbelt tensioner (shredded belt far from home), radiator leaked, crankshaft oil seals, air intake split - makes our original FL1 look reliable --- the devil is she loves it Confused Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Dont worry - stearing well clear of micra's - despite their percieved japaneseness, since the french took them over they have suffered greatly from the french quality - especially in the engine department!!!!

I'm completly with you on the big engine old car thing, although I dont think she is... She wants it to be a girly car and ideally not a diesel as it will just die wiith all the short trips..

The problem is that the laws of bangenomics say that whilst a big old car can be cheap for as long as it is working its fine, but when it does go wrong it invariably goes wrong big styly which then costs megga bucks, where as if you go for an old ford chances are it will plod along for an ever and a day and if it does go wrong it's likely to be a cheap part of one you can get from a breaker.

Oh and alos insurance is also a factor - when you have a thousand pound car but insurance is 500 quid then it just does not stack up compared to a car that might cost 120quid a month but only 200 quid a yr in insurance.

Simple maths tells me that without a break down the big old car will cost 5.5k over 3 yrs (incl. petrol, insurance & tax) (but carry the risk) where a small new car will cost me 5.7k over 3yrs like for like with no risk!!!!!

That aside if paying out cash for a benger its got to be no more than 1200 - 1500 quid. Now if you've got some decent suggestions, I'm more than willing to give them ago..??

Maybe we need a new thread SOTW (Shed of the Week) for those who dont know!!!!! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

"landy says C1 worse car ever and 2 miles was too far !"
well thats odd as I'm over 6ft and have two lanky kids in their twentys and wee all fit and as for the worse car ever ! it has to be my FR2. Its been the most unreliable piece of junk ever ! Lesson learnt now I shall never have another ! Worst experience by far !
Landrover need to learn how to build a car first and then train their dealerships in the art of understanding how they work !
I had to buy the C1 to support the FR2 when it didnt start and when all the elecs went haywire and when it kept going into reduced performance mode !

As for bangernomics, Capt you are quite correct, we looked at a VW polo about 4 years old but with road tax and insurance and maintenance cost over 3 years the C1 was a no brainer as i basically got a new car for nought, so you are quite correct in your thoughts !
I quite often do a 300 mile round trip in the C1 with no problem at all and at least in three years it has always started ! Thumbs Up

Well - I did it - took your advise OG and got the mrs a nice little brand new Citroen C1 in white!

Drove it from the dealers and I actually quite like it!!! and its plenty big enough to cart the family around so Thumbs Up so far.

Got an absolute bargain as well so well chuffed with that.

Interesting tho - did any one see top gear the other night - spent 6.5k on a big old car and running them to see what happens.... be interesting to see if I did the wrong thing! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
