Yes a Defender wading depth isn't that great, but then those of us who expect to go deeper have a proper snorkel (note a raised intake is NOT a snorkel as an RAI isn't watertight where it passes through the inner and out wing.....) fitted. There are other reasons why Defenders wading depth isn't fantastic - axle breathers ( they only come up to 500mm too) for a start, which again many of us who like to get the inside of our defender wet have extended by aquarium pipe up into the top of the snorkel. Freelander2 and RRS/Disco3-4 and FFRR don't need axle breathers. All of this on a defender is completely useless of course if you don't seal the battery box which is under the front passenger seat and way less than 50cm above the ground................. and of course in the more recent designs like Freelander2 you have these strange rubber things round the doors to seal out the rain which on a Defender do b r all even though they are there. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

The air intake is in the void behind the front bumper and is really quite surprisingly low. As the result of submerging the air intake is catastrophic (before even thinking about submerging unwaterproofed electricals), I'll be sticking to the 500 mm rule! |

Just don't try this in your Freelander2...... it will spoil the carpets.

The air intake is the side grill now, but on FL2.1 it was behind the front light, I presume it was because It was a early of production line car and the part was missing or was a later addition

At the Honiton Experience Centre I was told that the air intake is the left hand wing grill and there is ducting behind mine, a 2007 GS, that leads to the air filter. They suggested creating a bow wave and following in the trough if the water is likely to be deeper than 500mm.

Interestingly, it was the very same Honiton centre that told me it was behind the front bumper when I visited there 3 weeks ago.... |

I agree. I have had mine in bits and it's in the side vent ok.. All it takes is a nice gentle approach with a steady bow wave in front. A nice example is on the below clip (even if I do say so myself ) Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards |
