D3 to FL2 - should I ?

Put this thread up on the Disco3 site a litle earlier.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post767164.html#767164
Would appreciate FL2 comments, thank you. Thumbs Up

Just having some thoughts:
My D3 is now 6 years & 1 month old!
Has 160k on the clock!
No warranty and has some regular repairs [but still in excellent fettle]!
Over £100 to fuel and that can be on a daily basis with the high miles I do.

If I were to change to a D4 I'd be forking out £47k to £51k [for a Landmark or HSE].
That's a lot of money when business aint that good.

So thinking on something cheaper to buy and run so thoughts went to the FL2.
I can get a 3 month old [new style] HSE SD4 Auto model on 4k with all the kit for just under £31k.
[LR Build price new is over 38k].
OK I can get a decent secondhand D3/4 for that money, but the high running costs will still be there.
I don't really need the 7 seats, though I do utilise the load space in the D3.
I don't do much off roading nowadays as the vehicles have got to last me.
But big plus is the FL2 purchase price and general running costs - fuel, tax, servicing etc.
Plus I'll have just under a three year warranty if/when things go wrong.

So just wondering on peoples comments/experiences on my thoughts.

Thumbs Up

I was just reading the other thread and pondering on it Very Happy

I think the down sizing will be the hardest of all to deal with, the saving are the best part of the change

Ride quality is very good in the FL2, not air suspension floatiness but still good

I'm not changing yet myself, but I have been pondering as I also wanted to do a fl2 to D4 swap, but my low mileage and short trips ruin my fl2's mpg, and it would be a whole lot worse head that way, so I sort of can see why your considering the swap to a more economical car,

I think you'll enjoy it, you'll always have the D3 memories to hold on too, and when business improves you'll be able to look at the options, FL3, Evoque, etc etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

fl2 is a fine car, no reason why not to. I'd not feel too comfortable owning a 160k milage D3 or any other complex car mind.

Maybe keep it and buy a nice hatchback for mileage trips???

I shall wave at it next time I'm buying light bulbs from Simon across your street Thumbs Up

After driving a D4 the other day, now want one. Load space way better than FL2 so if you use it, you would miss it.

you would probably miss the load space in the D3 if you are saying that at the moment you do use it.

the FL2 can't compete withe the D3 in useable load space.

obviously there is more space in a D4 even more load space in a transit van, But he has more to think about than the space in particular the fuel economy.

Read on the D4 link that 'they' seem to think Fl2s drop in value more than Discos???

I have changed from D3 hse (56) to FL2 hse(60) and would reccomend it ....the FL 2 is a great car im getting average 31 MPG !

yes the D4 was a fantastic car and in a couple of years i WILL have one but....5.9% lr finace on fl and not avail on D4 with the lower price to buy and the lower fuel prices etc made me choose the FL2....and 6 months later and 7,000 miles down the road I dont regret it....

Only complain I have is that wife didnt like the D3 so very rarely used it....BUT she loves the fl2 and takes it out with out even asking me !!! Big Cry Twisted Evil Sept 1 2010 Now the PROUD owner of Galway Green Auto Diesel HSE

Other way round mate, SWMBO doesn't use her FL2, uses the bigger car all the time. The mpg difference is only 2-3mpg.

I'd try and get one to try for a couple of days to check that you can get on with it. My experience is that a FL is so different from any Disco or RR in feel and to drive that it could be from a totally different stable altogether.

From Jeep Grand Cherokee AUTO Overlander to FL2 AUTO HSE

I have just down sized from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander and I wasnt sure how that would work.

Well the Freelander is solidly built and the road holding is outstanding very similar to my Old BMW X5 Sport.

Its nippy and Im averaging 31 miles to the gallon which is 50% better than the Jeeps 20 miles to the gallon.

The Jeep whilst very smooth is a slug by comparison and I find the FL2 an outstanding vehicle really...exceptional can't recommended it enough.

regards Ross

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption. Big Cry

D3 to FL2? Simples but they are very, very different cars. If you don’t need the space and seven seats then it is an easy decision. On a full tank they both do 450 miles with the D3 taking £112 out your pocket and the FL2 £80.

For me doing around 11,000 miles a year and including VEL I save around £1000 a year. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things, so don’t change if it is just fuel costs.

I don’t regret going from a D3 to an FL2 why? The driving experience. The FL2 is more ‘car like’ and therefore you can throw it around.

They are both great cars and if money was no object then I would have the D4. Over a 3 year period and including purchase costs, fuel and servicing the FL2 will save me around £20,000. That’s what made the decision easy for me.

I was joking when I said it was simple but looking at your situation Ron you will save £20k on purchasing cost alone and when you add on fuel @ 26k miles a year that’s another £2k a year.

I met many of the guys on the Disco3 forum over the 4 years I owned a D3 and when I posted that I was considering a FL2 they gave me 12 months before I would be back. Well its now 18 months and no regrets…………….my FL2 is great Thumbs Up A Land Rover owner since 1988

I went form a D3 to a FL2 2010MY HSE. I have to say I didn't do much research on the FL2 other than it was reliable and the test drive proved I was very happy with it. BUT, the MPG is no more than I had on my D3. I get 32MPG, the autobox taking up most of the fuel. Maybe the SD4 is better?

It has the same finish as the D3, so you'll be used to it, but as a Boxster is not a 911, the FL2 doesn't have that proper big boy feel.

I would go for the D4.......far better engine and gearbox. Plus the cabin now is a much nicer place to be. 2010MY Freelander 2 HSE Auto
