has anyone taken off oem side steps and put on tubes, is this a straight forward one off one on or a pain in the a

Never swapped them but side steps have three mounting points where as Tubes have two, you may be lucky and mounting point one and three on the steps will line up for the tubes Even so you will need to remove the plastic sill covers which just pop off, have fun lining all the little poppers up on refitting the sill covers  p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
