Automatic conversion

For those technical bods.

It is realistically possible to convert a manual to Automatic? I know some will say it's easier to change you car and I agree to an extent.

But after all the work and effort I have put into mine over the years, if it could be converted I would consider it. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

My neighbour had his defender changed to auto atound 12 years ago and it cost him 3k then. Expensive, but as you say, you're car has had so many mods, it's a case of balancing how much it's worth to you against the cost of an auto box Thumbs Up

(Good move though as the manual boxes are s Censored t Laughing Whistle ) Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Cheers guys. If it cost about £3000 then I would just do it, as this would be considerably cheaper than changing the car. I am waiting to hear back from LR Halewood to see if it is actually possible. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. OK, before this gets out of hand, I will put in my points.

1) The manual is good, but I think the Freelander 2 drives better as an auto. That is of course my opinion.

2) When I bought my Freelander 2 back in August 2007, TD4 was only available in Manual, so I had no option of an Auto.

3) Yes it may be expensive to convert, and yes it may not be possible to do. But even at £3000 for example, it is way cheaper considering the condition and spec of mine than spending £35k plus on a new or newish auto. I say £35k as this is what the decent SD4 HSE auto's are fetching at the moment.

4) If I change the car, I see no point in buying a pre-facelift HSE TD4.

5) This is the most important one, my wife who drives our FL2 daily is just recovering from her second micro discectomy operation on her back so an Auto will be the best long term solution.

So this is not a case of who has bought the right car, wrong car, which is better, which is not. I have a decision to make so am gathering all my facts before deciding. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Good point about SD4 coming as a manual in Evoque.

SD4 Freelander 2 is coming with a manual box as well, and also Freelander 2 is getting the 237bhp 2.0 Turbo Si4!!!! But not in the uk!! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Another point to consider is also the hassle involved with your V5, it is down as a Manual so this will need to be changed along with the Road Tax as your Emissions will change, if it can be?
I was told though that the Defender is now classed as a commercial so therefore the Emissions will not be applicable for them if converting them from Manual to Auto.

I think your creating a whole load of hassle for your self on this one Mav Thumbs Up

Don't forget to tell your insurance company if you do go ahead as it will be a modified car.
I would imagine there are a lot electrickity bits that will also need to be changed including the loom.
My hunch is it would not be a financially viable move. 09 FL2 HSE auto Lago Grey

Fair play to Mav if you do this! I don't think it would be impossible tho, as for telling the dvla that would be fairly easy as mavs freelander is prob pree emissions! Also only certain models of the defender are commercial, my station wagon was most certainly classeed as a car, the tax was £430 a year!

Scotland 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black

I know one nutter who converted his auto MX5 into a manual, loads of work but it could be done, although the fancy electronics on the FL2 will make it a lot more difficult methinks. Surely much cheaper just to trade it for a different model?
