SD4 Fuel Consumption

Took the FL2 out for a drive this morning, and for the first time in the two months I 've had it, it broke the 40mpg barrier. It managed to get to 44.5mpg for a while but overall it's average was 41.8mpg. Well pleased. My 08 manual only ever managed 38mpg. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Well Done j77 Thumbs Up Normally, I get around the 40+ with my10 F2 manual XS but, with the recent weather and engaging 'Snow' with the TR this has dropped to 37mpg. Still not bad though Thumbs Up

I'm very interested how the real world economy of the SD4 works out as I have one on order.

Everyone seems to be telling me to expect around 32-34mpg despite my run to/from work being a mile onto the dual carriageways then 20 miles of A-Road - I was hoping I'd be seeing closer to the combined figure as in my current car I'm seeing the combined MPG consistently.

My mpg is on the up and up, and I am still under 3,000 miles.

Tank to tank it now exceeds 38 mpg.

On my 27 mile journey to work - (c 1 1/4 hrs -1/3 Hilly country roads, 1/3 stop start motorway, 1/3 urban crawl) I have posted over 42mpg now for every day for a week on the trip computer.

From a cold start when I hit the motorway this morning c 12 miles into my journey I was up to 52.4 mpg.

I only get 38 mpg going home.

Why? I live 600 feet up in the pennines and I have gone downhill 500 feet or so when I get to work. My last two cars showed a similar pattern. The last 200 yards to my house can lose 1 mpg after 26 miles (instantaneous down to 3mpg!).

I drive normally generally going with the flow, in auto -start off, put into drive and go, put into park when I arrive - no putting into 'N' ever, but knocking it into 'Sport' to overtake or to pull across X roads as quickly as possible.

... and I've just had my first tank-full where I have dared to go over 500 miles - not knowing how much I could trust the 'range' on the computer (501 miles took 57 litres, and it was saying I had 60 miles range) Trevor

In "FL2 2011 MY Concerns" on 19th Jan I have 2 replies "Druand" on this subject.

Now 2k plus miles and certainly engine really starting to loosen up nicely. From 2 previous FL2's about 4k before the consumption gets to best. All FL2's (3) Gone

As a direct comparison, I drove the exact same 92 mile round trip that I take to the football in the FL2 that I had done in an A4 two weeks earlier. It is a perfect mixture of back roads, A roads, M25 complete with 50mph roadworks, and London driving involving the inevitable grid lock that is the Seven Sisters Road at 5pm. My SD4 with less than 100 mile on the clock returned 37.4mpg whereas the Audi did 42mpg.

I am happy with that thank you very much. It's worth 4.6mpg to be able to laugh at the speed bumps instead of wincing Smile For a free country, it does seem pretty expensive these days.

Any differences in diesel?

I ask as with petrol some cars (my current one) are optimised for 97 RON so by default I use V-Power, the detergents/cleaning additives are a bonus.

The FL2 will be my first diesel and I don't know if there is any benefit in using V-Power vs. the cheapest Supermarket diesel I can find?

Well I tried V-Power diesel and the mpg actually dropped under 30! Freelander 2 SD4 HSE - Ipanema Sand - MD co-pilot - Springer Spaniel in boot - Swift Challenger on the back!
