Its because plates change twice a year such as 07 and 57 are both 2007 registered |

It's always been the case in the UK for people to refer to the age of a car by the registration. Before the current bi yearly change twin number method, we used to have letters to identify the year of registration which was from August to August. For instance my very first car had a P at the end of the registration plate. Even now when I mention it it will be referred to as a P reg Vauxhall Viva. I think that was 1976 , but I'm not 100% sure.
