Andymcfc, Auto lights work with the switch in the auto posion and the lights should come on when the sensor feels it is dark enough, but it is not that clever with fog it has trouble sensing fog but at the same time you can be heading into the morning sun with the sun visor down, shades on and still the headlights will be on

Air con is a very usefull tool to demist and dehumidify it is automatically switched on when screen button used. It is the quickest way to demist. Heated front screen is to deice outside. Should also be run regularly to keep seals oiled, they dry out and then gas can leak. A recharge is about £80.
