It was -15 here in Derbyshire the other week and although it took longer to fire up, the engine still started in about 5 seconds maybe just over. I had a full tank of diesel at the time, dont know if that makes any difference. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I thought these vehicles were designed for cold weather use. -12C outside and even with a 40ah power pack attached to the battery, there is no joy. It just wont start. |

"HDC Not available" messages that go away when the engine is running are a symptom of a less than fully charged battery. In these low temperatures batteries take a pounding from all the electrical items we like to have switched on and they don't always get fully charged after a cold start if you're only doing a short run at low speed. |

As I have stated in a different post under technical I have had a couple of warnings in the last cold spell. Reduced Engine Performance that went away once travelling and also had the Engine System Fault lamp which stayed for a whole day whilst running but then went away. A diagnostic check by the dealer said it was due to low battery volts. Suggest a trickle charge now and again to keep the battery topped up. These gremlins won't put me off owning the vehicle as long as I know the reason for them and they don't affect the actual running of the car. I think LR should take note and make sure on future models that they are not so sensitive. Didn't have any such problem on my previous Volvo which was computer controlled with all the bells and whistlers for warnings. Including bulb failure by the way. |

That's interesting about the "HDC Not available" message, being a low battery problem The garage checked the battery and recond it was OK!

I think there is some merit in this. My Beema has 0-60 tws in it and fires straight away, the freely is the same as the the previous post and struggles for the first couple of turns and then once running is fine. We also have (depending on how long it takes to fire) a bit of a puff of unburnt diesel when its cold. Measured the draw on the battery on start up and it is significantly higher on the 4 pot LR than the 4 pot Beema diesel which must mean the internal drag is higher in the LR (caused by oil?) Its all about how good the battery gives its power than the unloaded voltage (which is what the garage checks) and I bet the Beema one is of significantly better quality. If you got the LR2 you have the petrol engine. I think this mostly is a glow plug issue on diesel engines. I had big problems starting below -5C and took it to the dealer. 2 of 4 defective plugs. FL2, TD4 HSE The flaming Orange! |

No, it's not one of those things with diesels.
