Friends I have a question for you.
Please tell me you use the engine oil, number and brand?
producer?
Viscosity and grade?
Manufacturer?
Thank you I'm sorry.
I did not know how to properly speak English.

It was -15 here in Derbyshire the other week and although it took longer to fire up, the engine still started in about 5 seconds maybe just over. I had a full tank of diesel at the time, dont know if that makes any difference. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Ok so after having all 4 glow plugs changed i still had a longer than normal staarting this morning.

I didn't use the two stage starting because i wanted to see if i got the delay before cranking, ii didn't and it was
-5 Shocked
I now think the problem is I don't get the delay to allow the glow plugs to warm up, anyone any ideas?

Thumbs Up

By the way the garage did find one of the glow plugs faulty.

I thought these vehicles were designed for cold weather use. -12C outside and even with a 40ah power pack attached to the battery, there is no joy. It just wont start.

I had a similar problem.
When I tried to start the engine
the system was blocked as the
battery didn't working.
The 'solution' is the removing
of key from the slot then,
insert it again and press
the 'start' button.

Minus 7 here in Milton Keynes this morning: 8a.m.

Mines a 2010 FL2 GS, bought new in May this year.

Glow plug light lit up for a couple of secs.

The engine started with a 2-3 second delay.

I haven't got a clue as to why some people are having such crappy starting.

You have my sympathies.

Cold starting

Hi everyone - I'm new to the foum and having BIG trouble starting my FL2 on cold mornings at the moment!

Yesterday was -13 here and I just about flattened the battery getting her up and running. Once she did start I had lots of smoke, plus an un-burt diesel smell and lots of soot in the snow behind the car - not good!

Once she has run for a couple of minutes she will stop and re-start fine.

I have tried the press the button whilst not pressing the clutch routine - the glow plug light does come on and then go off. Yesterday on de-clutching I did get the "cranking will commence after glow plug sequence" message, but still a hell of a job eventually getting her going.

The local garage tested the glow plug sequence - which checked out ok. They thought waxing diesel - however all my neighbours diesels started fine.

I too have had the "HDC not available"messages also - but once running the go away. HELP!!

I Am now thinking about getting rid of her - too much agro for an newish car!!Crying or Very sad

"HDC Not available" messages that go away when the engine is running are a symptom of a less than fully charged battery. In these low temperatures batteries take a pounding from all the electrical items we like to have switched on and they don't always get fully charged after a cold start if you're only doing a short run at low speed.

As I have stated in a different post under technical I have had a couple of warnings in the last cold spell. Reduced Engine Performance that went away once travelling and also had the Engine System Fault lamp which stayed for a whole day whilst running but then went away. A diagnostic check by the dealer said it was due to low battery volts. Suggest a trickle charge now and again to keep the battery topped up. These gremlins won't put me off owning the vehicle as long as I know the reason for them and they don't affect the actual running of the car. I think LR should take note and make sure on future models that they are not so sensitive. Didn't have any such problem on my previous Volvo which was computer controlled with all the bells and whistlers for warnings. Including bulb failure by the way.

Cold Starting

That's interesting about the "HDC Not available" message, being a low battery problem The garage checked the battery and recond it was OK! Confused

I will leave the battery on charge tonight and see how I go on tomorrow morning.

Cheers

I think there is some merit in this. My Beema has 0-60 tws in it and fires straight away, the freely is the same as the the previous post and struggles for the first couple of turns and then once running is fine. We also have (depending on how long it takes to fire) a bit of a puff of unburnt diesel when its cold.

Measured the draw on the battery on start up and it is significantly higher on the 4 pot LR than the 4 pot Beema diesel which must mean the internal drag is higher in the LR (caused by oil?)

Its all about how good the battery gives its power than the unloaded voltage (which is what the garage checks) and I bet the Beema one is of significantly better quality. The missus - SD4 HSE - Black - 2012

It was very cold (-10 deg. F or -23 C) a few days ago here in Ohio and our LR2 started just fine in the morning.

I will try that trick next time it's really cold. It's back up in the 20's today.

If you got the LR2 you have the petrol engine. I think this mostly is a glow plug issue on diesel engines.
I had big problems starting below -5C and took it to the dealer. 2 of 4 defective plugs. FL2, TD4 HSE

Same issues here......

Lots of cranking time in the cold weather.
Tried leaving the strat til the coil light goes out and just the same.

This morning, -11 and got the HDC error code, then tried the stop start button, cranking away for about 7 seconds, got the crank message, still no start.
Pressed the start stop button again, started the third time after another five seconds, lots of smoke too!! Shocked

Just called Guy Salmon to book it in in Sheffield, and they said " all diesel cars are doing this, just one of those things! " but they could get it in to check the battery if needed sometime in the spring!!! Shocked

Well not the spring but in-between xmas and new year!

Anyone have this diagnosed, surely its not just one of those things!!! Confused Anyhoo off oot on me mobike.....

No, it's not one of those things with diesels.

It has been -12 here, -10 this morning and I start as normal, the delay is about 4 seconds then a 1-2 second crank before it fires up with no smoke. No HDC message and I would say mine is normal.
