Hi guys/gals

I have the Land Rover Roof Rail Kit attached to my Freely that I inherited from the previous owner.

Do the cross bars come with a special key to unlock the cover so that I can move the bars up and down; or can I use something like the car key/screwdriver to gain access to the cover?

The roof rails come with a sort of key. Its just a flat blade but it incorporates a torque device that makes sure you tighten them up to the correct amount. A flat blade screw driver will work but you need to make sure you tighten them correctly.

The Allen key has a flat plastic blade that would take them off

The actual Allen key is torx star shape with a whole drilled in the end

Hmmm, I'll give it a go one day.
At least I now know I should have had a device of some sort to get into it.

AiiEEX did you get the bag that the cross bars come in? If so, the tool may be in a special pocket ... easily missed if not aware of it. The flat blade can be substituted by a large flat screwdriver blade or similar, but the allen key part (Torx fitting) is fixed to the torque indicator. You could use a separate allen key provided it has the torx with security end but over or undertightening might be an issue ... best to get the right tool from LR or wherever.

Btw, max roof loading with these bars isn't great! & unless you're fairly tall, you might need a step of some sort to remove/refit the bars. Using the Allen key when you can't eyeball the business end from below is a bit tricky imo!

My LR2 came with some very handy steps to stand on to load the roof and check the rails.

If you're interested in the Part Number for the steps, I'll give you a hint. They say 235/55R19 on them...
