Went from Goodyear to Pirelli 18" tyres and noticed thar the Pirelli's were a bit quieter. Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys |

The torque converter gives the impression of a slipping clutch. The engine speed is not directly related to the road wheels as the system gives you the best ratio for the work required. As your engine does not deliver full power when cold, the torque converter will allow it to run faster to make up for this. It should sound more "normal" once it warms up. There are ways of causing the box to "lock up" and largely avoid this slip, (I think putting it in command shift does this?) but I haven't driven an auto Freely so I'm not too sure of the datails.

I have heard that engines rev harder when cold to warm up quicker to reduce emissions, Yet another EU directive??. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

No that's wrong, it's to do with being down on power and not working correctly when very cold, so diesel auto's compensate by having the revs run higher, whereas petrols are on a choke/high idle and running rough in a similar way. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
