Following my previous post about the TD4 vs I6, I thought a more sensible comparison might be to compare cars of similar price - i.e. to let bigger miles bring down the cost of a TD4 to I6 money.

I've noticed that there a few (presumably ex fleet) TD4 HSEs appearing on the market at 3yrs old with 60-90k miles on them.

Any views on how the FL2 will cope with this kind of mileage and whether they'd be a sensible bet?

60K probably no problem, would probably think twice at 90K miles though. Would probably need timing belt replacing at this mileage. I would personally always go for the lowest mileage on offer.

As long as its got FSH and looks in good condition i cant see a problem, you take a chance with any car you buy regardless of the milage. Even new ones can be a pain.

Lets be honest, the diesel engine has only just got properly run in at 60,000 miles

I agree with the brake pads and discs, as for the suspension, I would expect a good life from this as with the steering (although I know there has ben some known problems). The timing belt is good for 100,000+.

Chances are that a 3 yr old with high miles has lived most of it's life cruising down the motorway - not particularly taxing! A low miler could have done a 1000 school runs

Had new discs and pads and had a new steering rack and pump on mine all since 60k now on 68k

I bought a '58 plate HSE with 25000 miles on it 9 months ago and it is a piece of crap. Warranty means nothing 'cos Land Rover are not prepared to admit there is a problem with the car. If you have a vibration gearbox issue with the car LR WILL WALK AWAY. It will cost you money to sort the problem out cos they will say it is operating within parameters.

Mine had extended Land Rover waranty 1 owner who part exchanged back to main dealer who sold in on to a indpendent so mechanics were well looked after. Body work had a few stone chips drivers seat cream leather had slight wear on o/s Gliptone leather colour matched it now trim looks mint .The wife is main user she does 4000 miles per year .we will keep it for 2 years so milage will not be too high for a 5 year old car we have had lots of high milage cars all ok p j stone
