Tyre Rolling Circumference

Maybe a stupid question to some, but please bear with me.
Just found a piece of metal wedged into my rear off side tyre and so I am looking at replacing it (quite a cut in the tyre).
Question is, by replacing the old tyre with a new one (say 8.5mm tread from new) will the additional rolling circumference of the new tyre compared to the existing rear near side tyre (4.5mm tread left) cause any problems with the rear diff or transmission. At £150+ a tyre I don’t really want to buy two new tyres just now. I know LR state replacing tyres in axle sets but is this absolutely necessary.
Hope this makes sense.
Chris
