Correct Motor Oil for FL2 TD4 with DPF - AndyC, 30/11/07

The above post and its following threads are a good read if you accept the significance of oil quality.

There is a curious indifference across Landrover and its national and international business dealerships that I am unable to get to the bottom of regarding oil quality. Landrover appear immovable and determined to stick with its poor quality specification.
In two letters that I wrote to them, the lady who replied to them both said that she was not familiar with technical matters concerning oil and could only supply the M2C 913 B specification.

To you, the users of its products, relative to the current generation high quality synthetic oil products on the market, it means:

• Increased engine wear at start up, particularly in the winter.
• Increased fuel consumption
• Almost immediate loss of original oil viscosity specification.
• Increased degradation of anti oxidant oil additives
• Increased degradation of viscosity control agents
• Poorer detergent/engine cleaning ability
• Increases in sludge and varnishes.

May I recommend the reference link below it is a wonderful read, and may just be the knowledge some of you will be inspired by. I came across it a few years ago.

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/engine_oil_history.shtml

I have just filled my FL2 with fully synthetic Mobil 5W 30 ESP. It does not have a DPF, but it will be supportive of the FL2's three way cat. ESP stands for emission system protection. I have decided to ignore the vehicles warranty.

Kind regards Toadshall

Are you by any chance flogging the stuff Toadshall?

Are you aware of the testing that manufactuers do with oils?

Have you read any threads on Pug 4007/Crosser/Outlander regarding oil?
It's the same engine after all.

My local LR dealer uses Shell Helix fully synthetic at service. I have no problem with the cost of these high quality oils.

BUT prior to retiring I was 25 years with a Ford dealership (privately owned) and used nothing but Fords own M2C913B from when it was introduced and recommended for 99% of Ford range. In all that time we NEVER had an engine failure which was related to lubrication problems.
Fleet only paid for this grade and many thousands of repmobile mondeo diesels have been thrashed over many millions of miles on this oil. If oil was not up to job fleet would soon have made a bigger noise than a big end. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Druand,
Yes, you're quite right. If the general public knew just how many miles an engine can run on bog standard oil without changing it! VM's do it all the time, never mind expensive synthetic oil.
That's not to say you don't need to change the oil at service intervals; merely that you could be wasting money by buying expensive oil. You'd be better off using bog standard oil and changing it often.

This is the oil that LR recommends and my dealer puts inside engines.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarti...Id=7036852

It's an C1 type of 5W30 oil.
C1 means Low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous, Sulphur) fuel efficient (max 0.5% ash).
From what you see, it conforms with both A1/B1 fuel efficient standard and A5/B5 performance standard.
And observe from the Castrol site that it is a workshop product, meaning it is distributed mostly only to dealers, not to the public shops.
Click on the zoom icon below the picture on the site and see what says on the label of the bottle: "Recommended by Jaguar and Land Rover".

So what oil is the recommended then? And I mean Viscosity etc.

Is it 5W 30 or something more like 10W 40?

Many thanks!

Yesterday, on my last service, they've used Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A1.
It seems that the previous SLX Proffesional C1 isn't available anymore.
Again it complies with both A1/B1 and A5/B5.
And for reference, compare with Mobil1 ESP Formula 5W30, recommended by Peugeot for its 2.2 HDI engine.
Each draw its own conclusions. From my point of view, I will stick to the recommended Castrol 5W30 A1.

The Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A1. is the oil used by my LR Dealer and there's a 1ltr bottle of this in the FL2 at all times. So far we've never had the need to top up the engine oil in the last 12mths from new.

Next week it goes in for its first annual service at 17k+kms. I'll be interested to see what they discover during their "servicing".

What is the recomended oil for the car, how much do you need & what is the cost? Does the FL2 use much oil as I checked it before we left Blackpool (only the 2nd time I think I have ever checked it) & it was I believe just above the minimum but left it as I wasn't sure what to put in it. Mileage is around 8000 I think.

Recommendation: In the handbook says that LR recommends Castrol. It also says that it must comply with WSS-M2C913-B specification. Page 33 of the handbook. And, in this moment, the Castrol's oil that complies with that is Magnatec 5W30 A1, like said in just a couple of posts above... Simple as PI. Laughing
Quantity: 6 liters.
Price: Varies from shop to shop...
Consumption: Some cars (engines) use so little oil that, between services, you don't need to add. Others use up to 2-3 liters between services. Depends on the driving style, engine's tolerances, engine's breaking-in process, etc. Like people, engines (on a microscopic scale) are not two alike. Laughing

Bought some of this from Tesco's??!!(Castrol GTX Magnatec). Says recommended by Ford on it and as my engine block had a delivery note addressed to Ford still stuck to it when I got the car, thought this would be the best bet.
