It doesn't matter what we use, none of us are invincible from cyber crime but we do what we can.

A former work colleague who is a computer boffin told me that mccafe and norton are overrated and said that AVG are one of the best and it does include a shield to hide passwords etc when they are transmitted over the wireless network. It also has a scanner on the toolbar that warns of iffy websites that may contain threats.

I use firefox and here is how I have armed my comp:

AVG security suite
Spybot search and destroy
Trusteer Rapport (shields passwords as you type from spyware etc)

The great thing is that they don't interfere with each other and it does not slow the computer down.

If you do happen to find AVG flogging your system, (trust me, it does on some set-ups), try Avast for your anti virus. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

I use Comodo free and does Firewall & Antivirus, 

I use Avast on my PC- free to home users.

It has never let me down and it's really easy to do a scan. You can see it constantly monitoring on the bottom bar.

You just have to register & get a passkey.

You can upgrade for more sophistication if you want.

Don't have anything on my Macbook - yet!!!

I like it when i find others without protection as it means my iphone can connect and be a little faster

AVG on my home PC, use McAfee extensively at work, my advice would be have some sort of AV product as a minimum and don�t click on things that look too good to be true... Remember big reputable companies don't and won't use spam or pop ups to try and sell you something.

For example if you get an email with a photo of ann kornakova nude - its a virus
If you get a popup from the internet saying you have a virus get a free virus check - its a virus
If you get some Nigerian banker offering you lots of money to launder money for him - its a virus

All the people who craft these malware are just looking to exploit the vulnerable and are counting on people being stupid and naive. IF YOUR NOT SURE - DONT CLICK IT!

Oh and that also counts for mac and linux users, although the level of threat is lower, people are starting to wise up!

Oh and I recommend that anyone with a decent internet connection get themselves either a router with basic firewall or ensure the PCs firewall is enabled. BT FON / Openzone and all those are fine. It effectivly creates a seperate virtual private network which is completly seperate from the persons who broadband connection it belongs to... It does this by authenticating your access by entering a username and password and suceuring your connection using ssl / tls.

I think wardriving only becomes illegal when you unlawfully use someone else's internet connection without having an agreement in place before hand. Oh and dont be fooled into conencting to hotspots such as 'Free Public WiFi'. These are viral SSID's made to make you connect - possibly sending a virus at the same time and once added to your pc will start to broadcast itself for other unsuspecting victims to get it!!!

Easily done but easily identified by looking at the network connection and seeing the network type as 'ad-hoc'

I use Norton, along with Winpatrol and Spybot.
Winpatrol is an independant virus/Bot spotter. If you've not heard of it, you might like to try it. It's free, but for a small fee you can upgrade.
