Hi all,

My FL2 is now getting to its 10-year service time, and I realize it's getting time to change some of the fluids and wear components. The vehicle has 162k kms.

Although I'm generally keen on preventative maintenance, I was thinking of potentially spreading the maintenance over two services rather than just one in order to spread the added costs (I usually bring my vehicle in for an oil change every 8 months). As such, I was wondering if anyone on here could guide me on what should be prioritized on the next service (including if you all think I should just get everything done at once).

What has already been done so far/recently enough
-Coolant flush
-Brake fluid and flexible brake hoses
-Water pump

What needs to be done as far as I'm aware
-Replace spark plugs
-Transmission oil change
-Transfer case oil change
-Rear diff oil change
-Renew ancillary (accessories) drive belt
-Renew Transfer case oil

-Replace spark plugs - Why not they are serviceable items

-Transmission oil change - It has a drain plug, easy to do at home with wheel off just ensure your plug spanner is in good shape and right size as its a tight devil to undo.

-Transfer case oil change - Fluid is pence but a pig to get at without a ramp.

-Rear diff oil change - Did mine on the floor using tube to suck old fluid out and again fluid is pence.

-Renew ancillary (accessories) drive belt - Yes the sooner the better.

-Renew Transfer case oil ? A Repeat line ? or do you mean the Haldex. I used a specialist so it could be cleaned and filters changed on a bench so more expensive. Cars like Audi say do Haldex filters and oil at 30.000 miles !!!!!

Also treat the power steering to new fluid and re-charge the AC. Power steering I did myself, some tips on here on how to do it and cost me 1 pack of fluid.

Brake fluid needs bleeding every 3 years.

Apart from the Haldex the rest is peanuts.

Based on the spark plug comment I am assuming that you have the 3.2 six cylinder


As for priority (here is the order that I would do things)

* Power steering reservoir and fluid - there is a filter screen in the bottom,for the fluid I used Pentosin 202 (when I flushed the system and replaced the reservoir even my wife noticed the change)

* Spark Plugs - I changed mine at 50,000 miles and again at 100,000 (Denso (5344) IKH20 Iridium Power Spark Plug)

* Fuses in engine bay - I replaced mine due to discoloration/corrosion (likely due to to out gassing from a failing battery)

* Rear diff oil change (a drain plug with a magnet is a good idea)

* Transmission fluid change (I used Mobil 3309 Automatic Transmission Fluid)

* Haldex fluid and filter (it would be nice to clean the screen on the pump also but that requires significant disassembly)

* Transfer case Oil (I drilled a hole in the casting to make draining easier)

* Replacing the accessory drive belt on the 3.2 is very involved (I'm waiting until 150,000 miles)



Some additional items to be aware of

* Vacuum Pump for the brakes may leak oil (Volvo Brake Vacuum Pump Repair Kit (S60 XC60 V70 XC70 S80 XC90) - Genuine Volvo 31401556)

* PCV valve diaphragm may tear (PCV for LR2 LR023777 comes with the gasket)

* Radiator Hoses will eventually fail (i have a picture from a S60 owner that shows which hose is likely to fail first)

* Fuel Pressure sending units can fail

* Starter Motor - mine just failed and I replaced it yesterday, I didn't realize how sluggish the starting had become

* Air Filter - Engine and Cabin

* Bushings and Pins for front Brake Calipers - I lubed mine with CRC 05361 Silaramic Brake System Grease (My son noticed that the brakes were no longer noisy; I did switch to EBC Green Stuff SUV front Pads at the same time)

* Front Calipers pistons were not moving very freely at 100,000 miles - I clean out the caliper with brake fluid and used compressed air and a clamp to cycle the piston until it moved freely

Just a note on the I6 starter. Mine was getting very sluggish so I searched for parts to rebuild it but without success. After much research, this part from Amazon looked promising:

Turned out to be the correct part for this starter and cured the starter issues. I was hoping to find replacement parts for the solenoid but no luck there. There are a few YouTube videos (search for Volvo starter repair) to show how to do it but it's very simple.

If anyone has any other leads on rebuild parts for these starters please share.

I will enquire with my local dealership as to the cost of each maintenance item and see what I do myself, what I get done by the dealership and so on.

Its no problem.

Everyone on this forum is very helpful.

Most of the cost for the items listed is Labor and not the cost of the parts/material (Yorky Bob pointed this out and I agree completely)

In my case I do all of my own work (except mounting and balancing tires)but I am more than willing to share what I've learned even if you are going to use the information to talk to your mechanic of choice.

I am really happy with my Land Rover, it has been a very reliable car.

And since you include a picture I am also including one.

I needed to get my LR2 back on the road so I just replaced the starter instead of rebuilding it.

I haven't decided if I am going to rebuild the old starter.

I bought some Castrol Syntrax 75W90 to attempt the transfer case oil swap whilst I had the car up on ramps doing the engine oil and filter service. You think I could find the filler bolt location? Lucky I couldn't as I realised that I had no silicone hose left in my homebrew gear cupboard for the syphon anyway.

I finished my service without touching the IRD and decided to leave it for next time once I have done some more research. I also like the idea of drilling out under one of the bolts for the drain hole as seen on another thread, but not sure how many times I'll be bothered replacing the oil in that little sucker.

I decided to check out the manual for the IRD drain location and managed to find a pic of where it should be. I can't believe I missed it but I thought it would have been on the side of the unit somewhere. Live and learn.

I plan on doing the Haldex (with filters), diff and manual gearbox soon. I must say the oil for the gearbox is tough to locate and may have to buy from LR if I cant source something local.

I've just been quoted £1281.16 for the 10 year (150,000) service - does that sound about right?

I don't have the time, equipment or inclination at the moment to do any of it myself.

My thinking is get it done properly and see the FL2 run for another 150,000 miles.... I'm still really happy with it. 2002 Honda VFR800

A standard "B" service should be no more than £350
Parts sourced direct from various suppliers
OEM Timing Belt and water pump £117.75
Alternator belt - say £12
Coolant - say £20
Other oils - say £75

10 year extra parts and normal B service £ 575

Its no bargain using good parts and oils and shows a large mark up if this is being turned around in one day.

I think I would get a tight quote on the Belts and water pump and then get a B service done with the other oils done as an extra possibly from 2 differing places so they can't fathom out your cunning plan.
