Greasing gear link cable

Hello, I have just bought a FL2: 2007 with 69,000 miles with 2 yrs mech/ele warranty. I think the gear change should be smoother than what it is and having read through the posts it is recommended that the gear link cables are greased, which should make the gear change smoother. Can someone please tell me where I do this (I understand there are two places) and is there any special grease I need?
Thanks.
