Tyre advice needed

Hi all. On a recent visit to the dealers, I asked about them supplying new tyres to replace my worn out 215 75 R 16 Contis. I couldn't believe my luck when it turned out that they had a set on 16'' rims like mine which they let me have at £90 each.

My plan is was fit winter tyres or all terrains to the old rims, but seem to be hitting a problem. The sizes listed on the web don't seem to include exactly my size, but there are 215 70 R 16 out there. Does anyone out there in the know whether the 70's would fit for example?

I'm no expert on tyre/rim combinations. FL2 TD4 S Baltic Blue, with twin electrics and towbar, roofrails, luggage cover, spare wheel and mudflaps.

One of the online tyre size calculators can help. I use >

http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator.htm

General guidance is not to deviate much more than +/- 2% in diameter so 225/75 R16 look like they are the closest.

You can fit up to 235/70x16 on the 16" rims, up's the gearing but gives you a little more ground clearance.

The 225/75x16 is a better fit though.

Question
Doesn't a 75x16 give more ground clearance than a 70x16 Question

Norway 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame

a 235\70 means a sidewall of 164,5mm and a 225\75 is 168,75mm.
The 70 and 75 part means the % of the width.
So yes in this case if you have a 235\70\16 tyre vs a 225\75\16 tyre the 75 tyre will give you more clearance, but if you had a 235\70\16 tyre vs a 215\75\16 tyre the 70 tyre would give you more clearance. Smile FL2, TD4 HSE

One thing I have noticed after the new tyres were fitted, (I get approx 2mm more rr), my speedo, when compared to my GPS is much more nearer the mark. Not seen it under-read yet though, thankfully. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!
