towbar fitting

hi all..........

got to say its a brilliant site you have here and i am so glad to have found you.

we tow a caravan so it was improtant for us to fit a tow bar to the newly purchased freelander2.

on wednesday i bought a witter removable tow bar which arrived in the post today.

i have bought the bypass relay aswell. just wondering if there is anything i need to watch out for? any hidden things i should know before starting the fit?

cheers in advance

Nuts and bolts bit will be easy enough. With the wiring I would suggest a dedicated FL kit either genuine or witter. This can then be plugged into the various sockets in the boot. I suggest you look at the fitting instructions for the guinuine kit on the LR site under owner info, there other links to it on this site if you can't find it. The pictures take a bit of following, but it will give you a good idea of what is invovled. This kit will allow dealer / towbar specialist to alter the software to turn off rear parking sensors (if you have them) when a trailer is fitted and for the indicator light to work on the dash.

Wouldn't advise just connecting a split charge relay into the electrics unless you are confident you know what you are doing. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

thanks for the advice....

its only single electrics we need as we never bother plugging the fridge in. the bypass relay is the one towequipe do to protect the onboard computer.

we cant really afford the price tag that comes with the dedicated electrics to be honest hense the reason we have gone down this route. the old freelander had the manual switch for the reverse sensors so very used to switching them off manually Wink so no problem there

many thanks for your advice ....i will have a nose at the pics in a bit

Can't remember does the manual switch on the dash switch off the rear sensors as well as the front ones? Had the switch on my old XS with front sensors, but new GS with just rear ones doesn't have a activation / deactivation switch. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

It's dead easy to do - did mine the other week no problems. Search on here for which cable colours to tap the bypass wiring into and pop a fuse in next to the spare wheel (again I got all info from the forum) and Bob's your Aunty's hubby - mine's just for a bike carrier so only needed single electrics. By the way, I'm pretty sure the PDC switch on the dashboard only does on/off for the front sensors.

The PDC switch on the dash turns the rear ones off on mine to quieten them down when reversing, obviously I have to press it each time I select reverse. Not sure of the age of your van but it is not a lot more to have the twin electrics fitted so not only will you be able to run the fridge and charge the battery but also things like reversing lights and ATC if fitted, its a lot easier to have both fitted now than having to do it again in the future if you upgrade Thumbs Up

Avoided the hassle, paid the price and got dealer to fit LR kit. Several trips later with CARAVAN no trouble at all. Wise move.
