yep its not just the air intake you have to consider When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car |

Ah ok I get that. Seems a strange one to sign a 4x4 that can't wade. I find it a very capable car off road, just that some of the track I get down do get flooded at times. |

it can wade its just as capable as the defender :S they said on my land rover day yesterday the defender ewok and freely were 500mm and the disco and range were 700mm When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car |

The Freelander2 is not the only Land Rover product that no snorkel is available for! There is none available for the previous Range Rover! 1998 300TDi Auto Disco, never to be forgotten.

Only reason the RR, RRS and Disco can go so deep is because of the air suspension, the measurements are taken in full height mode.

Having had a look at the intake system I can say that its only sealed from the clean side of the air filter onwards. just about everything prior will leak like a sieve. Even the pipework from the wing duct is only an interference fit with the airbox and in no way watertight. However, yes, the FL2 can wade as I've been able to verify myself on a couple of occasions. See my gallery. We did everything the others did. |

Very interesting. The tracks I am likely to wade down are well known to me I use them weekly just atm they can be under water. Seen an X5 blow its engine up on one of them before now. My old disco was great had water over the front of the bonnet. Not so sure I would weant to do that in the freelander though. |

Water over the bonnet is easy.

My understanding is that if you go much beyond the 500mm mark you run the risk of the car starting to float or, at least, being swept off course in flowing water. |

This video was being shown on Sky News last night of a Defender driver at Hamsterley forrest. Having a snorkel didn't seem to help at all for this bloke but I suppose it's all down to the approach speed.

Nah, he should have gone in with the doors open. If you look it starts to float and gets turned sideways on then wedges against the disco. Even a 4x4 wont get any grip if the wheels don't touch the ground!

Actually, it was a Mitsubishi Pajero, which as we know is not a true 4x4. Very sad nonetheless, but in essence what you say is correct...even Land Rovers are fallible in certain weather extremes.
