Tinted Windows

Hi Everyone - Picked up a new HSE TD4 yesterday! Very happy.

I was going to get the windows tinted but wanted to ask other peoples experiences. Are there any issues with certain tints and the radio aerial in the window?

I don't have the Sat Nav in the car, but radio reception is important!

The HSE windoes seem to have a light body tint in them - but I like a little darker - especially touring around in WA when it gets rather warm at time!

Thanks again! Looking forward to contributing to the forum when I have some more expereince! At the moment I've only driven the car 6km.

Cheers!

Hi Liberty555 - We like numerous others had privacy film added from the 'B' pillar backwards (Driver and passengers seat belt mounting point). Here in the UK on the HSE (maybe all spec) the standard window tint is already at the maximum permitted for the driver/passenger front side, but from the 'B' pillar I believe we can do what we want.
On the plus side film is sold as an added security feature (breaking glass + prying eye's) and also it's UV blocking (Which is always useful here in the UK Laughing )
It's worth mentioning that obviously any tint added to the car will make it marginally darker when viewing out from inside the car, also you will see the chain dotting around the two rear side windows and hatch (On a factory tint you don't) but this is of no concern really. I think there's before and after pictures still in my gallery.
Cost guide for you is about £180 Gbp fitted, well worth it.
No noticeable loss of radio reception at all.
Edit: I'll try for a before and after.....

Hi Liberty555, I tinted my windows several months after purhasing my freelander2 and I certianly don't recall any ill effect to the radio reception but I did notice a big differance to the comfort levels in the summer Cool
Good luck and enjoy your wheels.

Yes we didn't want the ''pimp my Freely look'' Laughing just a subtle tint, I'll have to look up the level that we got as I can't remember, but had it done in Otley/Leeds. I'll drop you a line snairda with the % just as soon as I have the info Thumbs Up

Hi Liberty555,

from memory, maximum tint you can go for is 70%. The effect on your radio reception depends on the type of tint you use. if you use metalied film to tint your rear windscreen, then your AM reception will be affected. However there wont be an effect on FM reception. Metalised paper are more durable and scratch proof than non metalised. What i did in my previous car was using metalised to all other places except for the rear windscreen and non-metalised film on the rear. You cant see any difference. 2009 i6 SE

Surely the aerial is on the side?

As Cristian says, one of the rear side windows is the AM/FM and the other is for DAB

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'll put the metallised film on all windows except for the rear side windows just to be sure.

It was my first weekend with the car and I put the genuine roof rack on. When I first picked up the car from the dealer I bought the rack and rails and pushed the limits to get a good price. Also bought the genuine rubber mat for the boot which I picked up for less than a cheap and nasty aftermarket one! If you're buying parts from the dealer, milk it for all its worth!

Cheers

Sorry for the delay snairda - couldn't find the receipt anywhere so I rang him - the level on our car from the 'b' pillar back is 35%.
Fyi - I'm told normal slightly tinted windows you get on most cars these days is at 75% which is the maximum you can have for the front + front side windows, you can do anything from the 'B' pillar backwards. The lower the % the less light shines through. He says the privacy glass factory fitted to Freelanders is about 20%. Film is available in 50%, 35%, 25%, 15% + 5% (for the full on pimp my ride look Laughing )

I had a "Fully pimped" Vitara a few years ago. Got pulled by the old bill. The sergeant said that If I could remove the front tints he would just say bye bye! If I couldn't then I would get a standard fine and a note to show the vehicle at my local police station.
Luckily I had a scraper in the dash. (Used for scraping flies off the windscreen). Have you tried to scrape off the tint material?? (not factory tints) Rolling Eyes
20min later he smiled and said "Bye-bye" Very Happy
