Infuriating boot lock!!

Some strange behaviour with the boot lock on my 57 Freelander 2

1. Lock will not release when using the general unlock on the remote (two presses).

2. Boot will unlock with the boot un-lock button on the remote.

3. Boot will unlock using the lock/Unlock at the same time...the buttons on the dashboard.

4. When the engine is started and D or R selected, the boot unlocks...the unlock solenoid keeps on operating even though released.

5. The ONLY way to lock the boot is to switch off, get out, close the boot and then v swiftly, lock the car. As long as you only unlock the driver's door, you can then move off!!!

Any clues please?

Thanks

David

Sounds like you need to replace the tailgate switch.

It's a common problem.

I just did mine this weekend

Switch was £20 from Dan at Duckworth. I don't think I would have tackled it without the information and photos within this thread, but with that knowledge provided it was very straightforward and everything is working properly now. Interestingly there was no sign of water, moisture or corrosion inside the switch as previously reported. The micro switch had just stopped working

Steve

PS that is the first "fault" I have had since car was new!!

Thanks - just ordered the loom with the switch from E-Bay. Had a look on You tube for instructions on a)removing the grey section and b) replacing the loom.

As you say, straightforward enough I think....of course, this fault appeared on the very week I am exchanging for an HSE Smile

Appreciate your comments.

David

Hi, new member, first post. I have just bought a FL2 and have a strange fault with tailgate. Tailgate would not open and was getting "tailgate open" message and could not lock car. Have found that if I turn lights on either with light switch or use the lights function on the key fob, then tailgate works normally, indicating that switch and lock mechanism are both OK. When I then shut tailgate there is no message, but if I then try to open tailgate without lights on then tailgate open message returns and car will not lock until I open and close tailgate as above. To me it is an electrical fault either short to earth or short to live somewhere, so before I have to resort to paying for probably expensive diagnostic tests, does anyone have any ideas where to check or what to test. Have bought a new switch anyway but as all works as normal with lights on have not fitted yet.

As a follow up to my post about the strange fault, problem is solved. I decided to fit the new switch just to eliminate the old one from the equation. On removing the cover I found a proper bodge job, the loom with 3 black wires going to the lock had been cut, to one of the wires was now connected the yellow from the switch, to another was connected the blue from the switch, these connections consisted of twisting the wires together and a bit of insulation tape. The third black wire was left unconnected.
I decided to put the new switch in and put everything back to standard hoping to then trace whatever problem had been the reason for the "mod". Fortunately the three black wires had been cut at different lengths easing the identification of which end went where. With every thing connected back together I was totally amazed to find that everything worked as it should with no problems, in fact it also fixed the other strange fault I had found where when I switched the side lights on the interior light also came on unless it was switched to off.
Have no idea why the original bodge had been done in the first place but all good now, I suppose the moral of the story is don't let the local butcher play with your car electrics.

I changed the switch today, bought one from PowerfulUK.
Easy peasy, even i got it done in under 40 minutes Whistle

LOVE the fact that it's working again Bow down

Things to do this summer though,
¤ fit the one missing bolt to the rear handle.
¤ clean behind handle and treat affected areas with anti-rust paint.
¤ replace the foam(?) padding between boot and handle

All the BEST!

If I use the fob to open the tailgate, it locks fast and no matter what I do I cannot get it to open. Then, out of the blue, it's open. Last time it took around 7 hours to unlock itself. It only happens when I try to unlock the tailgate with the switch button.

Mine has been playing up for a while now, sometimes working from the button, sometimes not, although it would always work from the remote. The final straw one day was when it unlocked itself just as I set off and the dog fell out the back Shocked no harm done fortunately but it could have been a lot worse.

When I took the tailgate trim panel off to check it out, I found that when unplugging the connector and then plugging it back in, the actuator operated just like pressing the button, when I checked the wires from the switch (black & blue) there was about 3 ohms across the switch, dropping to zero when operated, I assume there must be some corrosion going on internally in the switch although there's none visible externally.

I replaced the switch yesterday with a replacement from Dan at Duckworths for just under £20 (LLR079909.) Quick and easy job. Thumbs Up

After 14 months ownership mine recently failed. I was going to attempt the repair myself but then remembered I have a current Syntner Select warranty. They have agreed to repair it and is booked in for this afternoon. Hopefully it's the first and last fault!

Always up for a challenge I bought a new micro switch from mine off ebay for about 20p and swapped out the old one. Held the new one in place with silicone no problems at all.

MY15 tailgate failed

Progressing the repairs now. Both number plate bulbs blown but not visibly damaged.
Probably some kind of surge associated with the wiper gears jamming. I have the replacement Fiesta mk7 part to fit and will post photos when done.
Whistle

After fixing this on my 56 plate, I have a similar problem on my 64 plate. Big Cry

The tailgate is stuck closed and won't unlock manually or using the remote. Fuse 25 is OK.
I thought that the parts on this model had fixed the fault on the MY08 version.

Any ideas?

BTW it's under warranty still but the dealer wants it in for two days in three weeks time. They're having a Laughing Potted LR history since 1990:
Mk3 LWB Safari, Defender 90 County, Disco, Disco, FL1, FL1 RHD, FL1 Sport
MY08 TD4 HSE, MY15 TD4 SE Tech
