Yes, the dip stick is very strange. I'm expecting to snap in two one day!!!

Don't worry about the engine noise, it's perfectly normal. All it's doing is sending a warning to your sons VW!!!

Might try a different diesel V-Power no station closeby so BP Ultimate diesel might be worth a try perhaps?

I haven't tried BP Ultimate in the Freely yet but in my Disco it gave me quieter running, more oomph and more MPG. You should get the same effect by adding Millers to ordinary diesel though - it's basically just raising the Cetane level.

Most diesel engines are noisy, and I don't think there is cause for concern. I've changed the oil on the farm tractors for about 30 years and find that the oil goes black almost immediately. If you use a good quality oil is should stay "in grade". Enjoy the vehicle, and allow it to cruise at near maximum permissible speed limits.

Thank you all for the re-assurance.

Interesting that oil seems to go black very quickly. This seems strange to me and I would have attributed this to dirt and contaminants. I will try not to worry about this and the noise level when cold.

Thank you all again.
