Anyone had their tyres filled with Nitrogen ??

Hi All,

I was looking at prices of new tyres on the internet earlier today .........when I received a quote from 'Qwik Fit' I was asked if I wanted to pay any extra £1.00 to have the tyres pumped up with nitrogen Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

[b]Quote from site "Have your tyres filled with Nitrogen for only £1.00 Have your tyres filled with Nitrogen and increase tyre life by up to 25%, improve road holding and handling and increase fuel economy by up to 5%!

Seems a reasonable price for the benefits that Kwik fit say this achieves.

Anyone already do / done this?

Thanks

Mike.

Did you know that you inherently fill your tyres with 80% nitrogen...its called air. The additional 20% is hardly going to be noticeable, maybe eat one less muffin for breakfast should do the trick Very Happy Phil

In case you are not aware, the vast majority of aircraft tyres are filled with Nitrogen, for the following reasons: Nitrogen does not hold moisture and so wheel corrosion is eliminated. Nitrogen gives a more constant volume than air when there are changes in altitude or temperature. Nitrogen is inert and, therefore, does not accelerate any fire.

PLEASE NOTE that I am not claiming that these properties will be of benefit in a car, where for example changes in temperature and altitude are miniscule compared to an aircraft, i am just giving some useful information that some may find interesting !! Thumbs Up

I run about 78% nitrogen in my tires on my Land Rovers and Mustangs.

I also inhale about 78% N with each breath.

So you're just gonna spend few quid to get something you already have seventy eight per cent of.

It's your money, you decide ultimately, I'm just saying I wouldn't do it because I don't see it as enough of a benefit. If it were thrown in for free then sure, why not? Couldn't hurt right? I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

I'm no chemist but when you run a flat, aren't you poluting the air then?

Yes I have it done and it's well worth the £1 a tyre, the main benefit is that the tyre holds the correct pressure for much longer than just air

lypsyl, has it improved your mpg? Have you noticed any difference generally?

I had it on my last car, and I agree that the pressure holds longer, but they hadn't charged me anything for it, I just learnt it after they put it in.

I wouldn't pay any extra and get them to put it into the price for new tyres IMO. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone
