Advice please!

Hello everyone. First timer here! I've been besotted with Land Rovers ever since I had to drive one in the Lakes as part of my job but I've never been able to afford one (or justify running round town in one) before. Things have now changed and finally, FINALLY(!) I'm hoping my dream will become reality later this year.

However....despite wearing LR tinted spectacles, even I have had to accept that LR's reliability record has not been exactly great. What do I need to be aware of with the new Freelander 2? I've done as much homework as I can on it but there is no substitute for talking to people who actually live with the things. I would be very grateful for any advice on 'issues' or 'concerns'.

Many thanks.

There are a few minor issues which have been documented well on this forum - mainly down to starting issues etc.

If there have been major problems (a Friday afternoon car!), then as far as I'm aware, these have been swapped for new ones ??

I've now done just over 2000 miles in mine, and I would certainly buy it again if I had the choice. You just need to be aware that on any new model, there are bound to be teething troubles - the real question is how fast LR fix these and what level of importance they place on getting them fixed.

Hope this helps

BG

Hi PeteS
I have had my L/R2 SE since Jan 3rd with no problems todate!, very pleased with the car
My advice, make sure you have a good reliable dealer just in case, if you live anywhere near Derby I can reccomend an excellent dealer
I have no regrets, love the car

That sounds encouraging. I'm pretty confident of the dealer - Torver Land Rover near Coniston - so hopefully any niggles will be dealt with OK. No matter how good the dealer however, forewarned is forearmed and I'm grateful for your responses. The most I've ever paid for a vehicle so far is £11k so you can imagine my apprehension at nearly trebling it!

Also bear in mind that whilst forums like this are great for research, they can tend to give you a negative view, as people are quicker to post their problems than their lack of them!

Pete, the dealership you mention is part of the Lakeland Land Rover dealership - they are sponsors of this family of forums -Freel2.co.uk Disco3.co.uk, RRsport.co.uk, defender2.co.uk and FullfatRR.co.uk.
I have not heard anything bad said about them yet! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?
Now driving - RRE Coupe Dynamic Lux Auto with Plus pack, Fuji White, Ebony, SD4 with tow pack
Gone - 2010MY FFRR TDv8 Stornoway and Ivory, Privacy - the pace of a TDv8 RRS, the incomparable grace of a Range Rover
Gone but will be missed- RRS Tdv8 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather
Gone (only a little missed) RRS Tdv6 2.7SE Giverny Green/Aspen
Defender 90 County HT in Epsom Green

Yes I agree with nightfox, loads of people too busy enjoying thier new car, its when a problem occurs members are on to help others.

I would second this comment, but even those of us who have suffered the odd niggle still love the car. I've covered nearly 12,000 miles in mine and still hop in and drive it just for fun .... Sounds like you are well positioned to find a good dealer, thats what has let the LR expereince down for me.

Pete S. I just want to second what others have said. I've done 1000miles in mine with only the starting problem occuring twice. This was easily overcome by taking the key fob out and re- inserting it. I will take it in to the dealer one day for the appropraite download to be done to rectify the problem. I can say that this car is absolutely remarkable in mud. I had to drive it through what seemed like an endless see of mud several times over the wet Spring Bank Holiday. If I hadn't had the 1/2 day Land Rover Experience course I wouldn't have dared gone through it.
Your biggest worry is not the car but who will buy Land Rover next and what changes will they make. eg aftersales, service, spares etc

Agree with everyone else. I have now had the FL2 for 6 weeks and covered 3000 miles. Had the radio freeze twice and the starting problem once, but because of the forum I knew exactly what to do. This is a brilliant car and knocks spots off the Toyota Rav4 I had before.

I picked mine up in January and in 4000+ miles have had no major problems. I have had no starting problems and when I have stalled it a couple of times, a push on the start button has it running again immediately.
If I leave the wipers on auto, they wipe once when I switch on in the morning, so I switch them off at night to avoid the problem until the software is updated. At present I am getting 35 mpg on country roads and loving every minute of driving it.

Thanks to one and all for all this. I get a real sense of love and pride in your vehicles! I've taken in all your points and it just helps to confirm that I'm buying the right car. I expect that any new model will have its niggles but it is reassuring to find that there are no major concerns.

My missus and I are on holiday in Scotland for the next two weeks and I managed to book my half day off road experience for Dunkeld. I'm really looking forward to that!

I'll post again when I'm 'one of you'!

Thumbs Up

I think "niggles" is a good way of looking at it - not so many years ago if you said a car was unreliable or of poor build quality, you probably meant that you knew all of the AA mechanics personally, and your 1-year old car was already rusting around the wheel arches. These days, you'd probably mean that the stereo sometimes doesn't work or some of the trim squeeks when you go off-road. I guess it's an indicator of how far we've come!

Agree with all, I would have another, great car, had the pleasure of driving a FL1 courtesy car yesterday for 1 day and I forgot just how fantastic the FL2 is!!!

Only issues I have had have been software which appear to have been sorted yesterday, niggles to be honest.

Just do it you wont regret.

Pete S. I have had plenty problems with mine.....its now being swapped for a new one in August. I have completed 10,000+ miles, and the problems I have had are 'niggles' plus starting. If I thought the cars were duds I would not be getting another one I would be getting my money back!! They are great to look at great to drive great offroad and very comfy. Do not hesitate in investing your money as that is why you have a warranty.

All of us are in agreement ......you won't be unhappy Very Happy
