I would put in the 5w30 that landrover recomend, you can use more expensive oils but you wont feel any benefit only the deeper hole in your wallet Same if you bleed the brakes your self, they have the right low viscosity brake fluid and its not that dear. You should be able to do that operation with about 2 litres of brake fluid, just thought i would mention it |

Just a general point about oils. Am I right in saying that with our Diesel FL2 engine or any modern common rail diesel engine for that matter, you can have the semi and fully synthetic oils that you would typically put in your petrol engines ? The specific diesel oils with their additives are no longer required are they? |

I have not swotted up much on engine oils as yet but as a general rule of thumb im am led to believe that petrol and diesel engines do use different grades of oil due the compression ignition of a diesel engine and the spark ignition of a petrol one.

hence my earlier comment, so much to go wrong in order to save a little. better to get an independent to do the work if your not up to paying LR prices At work At home "I can't always believe facts I read on the web" - Charles Dickens winner by default of the tractor vs caravan race |

Well CG if your dads a retired mechanic and you have been working on cars since you were knee high to a grass hopper then there are a lot of savings to be had.

lol An egine is just an engine, all the same basic principals apply. There are many easy tasks that can be done with a little help for example chaning brake pads, discs, changing filters like air, pollen and oil as well as draining the oil etc. Granted there are far more electronics involved now but the best way as always is to start small and gradually work up step by step. Thats where these forums rule, there is always some one to help out |

Just going back to types of oil. The Opie finder link points to Castrol Magnatec 5-30 semi synthetic.....which you would not put in older diesel engines but it would seem is now a legit oil for our modern diesel FL2 and your modern diesel RAV 4 etc as well as being recommended for petrol engines as well. Is this right ? |
