UPDATE
Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies. Today I spoke to the big cheese at the dealership. It was an interesting experience which has led me to accept a few disappointing truths about LR dealerships.
First of all, I will be keeping the car, although at the weekend I was convinced I would walk away. The dealer principal has promised to the get the required parts (which are on back order) within a couple of days even if it means taking them off a new car. At last they are going out of their way to minimise the inconvenience that their mistakes have caused. The outstanding faults, despite being inconvenient, are however fairly minor and the car is a nice example so despite how poor their customer care has been up until now I see no point in asking for a refund. I would lose out as it will almost certainly cost me more to get another example of the same vehicle, according to the prices I see currently. Also the dealer wouldn't be bothered as they would probably just sell the car again for more than I payed because people are queueing up for used FL2s.
On the other hand though I have to accept that whilst it is a great car you have to live with the fact that the customer service that comes with it is rubbish. No matter what I said I couldn't get the dealer principal to agree that they had messed up and therefore needed to go out of their way to make right my disappointing introduction to LR ownership. I couldn't quite believe that he just didn't seem to understand where I was coming from! I even asked him if, as the boss, he was disappointed with their performance at letting a car go to a customer with these faults, but he wouldn't answer and just came up with excuses as to why the faults were missed. He simply didn't get it. On the other hand, I can't help but think that if I were a certain ex England bowler who is part of Somerset Cricket Club and who I know buys cars from them, that things would have been different.
So, my conclusion to all of this is as follows: If you go to Taunton Land Rover (there, I said it) you will probably get a really good deal from an attentive and very accommodating salesman. The service department will also be very friendly and will do a good job. If you have no problems with your car you will therefore be very happy indeed. But if you do have issues and expect them to go out of their way to minimise your inconvenience then forget it.......you're on your own. They'll probably sort it for you but in their own sweet time.
If only X3's weren't so c p!
