United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Santorini Black

First (1yr) service planned for 30 Dec, plenty of Google search results in my area - so far 3 quotes, one left to go.

£349.00 local dealer (seemingly not negotiable after asking to match second price -no call back!)
£288.00 local 4x4 specialist (provide vehicle pick up / drop off)
£151.00 local garage! (might pay them a visit to check them out)
£.......... local LR specialist - (expected £250-300)

All within 5-10 miles & available on the day I want - now which one to chose from??

1st service costs ?

I got a couple of quotes for the 1st service of our 2013 TD4 XS, from Sturgess in Leicester who I bought the car from and Bishops in Peterborough.
Sturgess=£302.93
Bishops=£190.83

Looks like no contest but I have some queries which others might be able to answer.

Sturgess include air filter but Bishops don't. A difference of £17.44 plus vat
Sturgess quote for 5.9 litres of oil but Bishops 5.4 (5.9 is correct I think).
The part numbers for the oil filter are different, but a search on the web for both parts(LR0253306 and LR001247) show them as LR oil filters for the Freelander.
Bishops quote for än oil drain plug, Sturgess for gasket-drain plug with again different part numbers and prices.

I don't know anything about Bishops apart from their web site info. which says warranty isn't affected when they service the car and apart from buying the car from Sturgess I don't know how their service dept. matches up against others.

I've not spoken to either company directly yet but before I do can anyone enlighten me on these points ?

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Mauritius Blue

Anyone have a rough idea of 1st service costs on a TD4 in West of Scotland before I start calling around. Problem we have is that Lookers owns the 3 dealers closest to me so there may be little margin for negotiation. MY13- TD4 XS Mauritius Blue, Privacy glass, Cold climate pack, Tailgate spoiler, Armrest pack, LED signature, Body side mouldings, Full size spare and finally Mudflaps

GONE - MY11 TD4 HSE LAGO GREY Privacy Glass

GONE- 04 Silver

Re: 1st service costs ?

Unnecessary quote removed

Interestingly, after speaking to both, Bishops upped their price to £204 and Sturgess lowered their's to £259 with a free courtesy car. I booked with Sturgess because firstly I get to drive a new version of something else for a day and it's free and secondly using an authorised dealer feels a bit safer. Daft I know. but the price is not that different.

Hi just had a quote from our local Lookers Land Rover and they quoted £379.80 for a first service. They tried to justify the cost by including software upgrades, engine flush, pollen filter road test etc rather than just an oil change.

Interested to see what price you are quoted.

Just received a qote from an Indie Land Rover Service Center for full first service for £226.21.

What shall I do?

Booked in for 3rd March for £226.21 inc VAT, collection and delivery!

If your primary concern is maintaining a full main dealer service history, then you have little choice.

I have never seen any financial gain from selling a car with a FSH (Full Main Dealer Service History) and what I have paid over the odds for such things, generally negates any gains I would have made had I gone to an indie.

My 2009 FL2 is now in it's fifth year, so from now on it will go to an indie for things like oil and filter changes. For anything which requires specialist knowledge, a LR indie specialist.

At my car's last service, I was charged £1.80 for the little copper sump washer which should cost pennies Censored , £5 for 'lubricating' the hinges and locks which is nothing more than grease Big Cry and who knows how much for someone waiting for the oil to drain before refilling it with oil that I had bought and provided. Overall, I'd rather pay someone a lower hourly rate to watch oil drain and sod the dealership stamp in a book! Whereabouts unknown stop going to follow stream until reach civilisation stop message ends

The Indie Land Rover Service Center that I am taking my FL2 for its first service is an Approved Land Rover Service Center who has just won the prestigious Land Rover Customer Care Award for the South region.

I am sure that their service stamp in the book will be just as good as fromthe main dealer Lookers where I bought the car but at a considerable saving of £153 is a no brainer IMO for first and possibly subsequent servicing.

My point is that when the time comes to sell your car, how much you have spent on servicing won't make any difference. Main dealers will offer you a couple of grand less than its market value anyway and selling privately is a bit of a pig to do even with full main dealer service history.
My opinion is that servicing is a necessity but that it is vastly overpriced compared to its real value. If you find an indie you can trust, use them and if you can undo a sump plug, replace an oil filter and refill oil, do it yourself. Whereabouts unknown stop going to follow stream until reach civilisation stop message ends
