Hi all,

I'm having a non start issue different from other non start issues I've had with this car before (yes there has been several!)

This time it behaves like its got a flat battery, press the button and it starts to crank then stops, dash resets itself and then nothing. Done it to the wife the other day without me so I stashed a multimeter in the door pocket and showed her how to measure the battery voltage if it did it again.

Well today I was driving and it did it to me. Whipped out the multimeter and battery is showing 12.4volts, no problems there. Other times holding the start button down for several seconds while cranking has fixed it but not this time. It ended up starting after I randomly pulled the gear lever through park to drive and back again and then pressed the button.

Wild stab in the dark here, maybe crank angle sensor????

Any thoughts?

I had this with mine. Only happened occasionally, then got more frequent until one day I got nothing at all. Seemed like a flat battery so forked out for one (without checking old battery first, dummy) but when I changed it over, again nothing. No cranking, nothing but a single click then everything dead. Then I started getting the dreaded HDC inoperative fault message.
Turns out it was the starter motor. Got the other half to sit in the motor and press the button while I hit the starter with a hammer. It fired up and I nursed it round to the back of the house until a new starter arrived. Once it was fitted, along with an extra earth strap, it fired up straight away and has never played up since.
Now don't quote me on this, but ISTR something about signals not being picked up from the knackered starter motor, making the car think there was a problem elsewhere, thereby shutting the system down - or something like that.
Hopefully someone else will correct what I have said or explain it better.

Hmmm, sounds familiar actually now that you mention it.

I had discounted the starter motor as I replaced it with a new one only perhaps 4 or 5 years ago. I'm guessing there'd be no warranty left on it by now! A starter should last longer than that though

Check the Voltage at the battery with the starter motor cranking the engine over.

If the voltage gets too low while cranking then the electronic gets confused and they malfunction


Here is what I get for my LR2 when cranking

battery voltage (initial) 12.25 Volts

Battery voltage (cranking) 10.97 Volts (less than 9 Volts, replace the battery)

that 12.2 voltage is too low really,unless the interior light was on when you checked it .when our stock batteries get to 12.4 we charge them

That is a fair point.

I should have charged the battery........

But the point of the test was to assess the battery in a worst case scenario, which is what I did.


That was very observant of you to notice.



Note to everyone else (not Sid) - you should follow Sid’s advice and charge the battery if it gets below 12.4 volts

Wife has just phoned me from the corner store close to home (thankfully). She's not happy, kids are ratty and guess what....

Car won't start or crank at all. I've had to ask her to walk home with the 3 kids and leave the car till I get off work in another 3 hours time.

You don't want the wife to be unhappy


Ask her to insert the key into the slot then push the start button for two seconds without touching the brake.

Everything should power up, radio should turn on.


If not then try the other remote and look into getting a new battery for the remote.

If everything powers up then press the brake, shift to neutral and then press start again.


If the neutral safety switch isn't functioning properly then the ECU will think that your not in Park or neutral and will not let you start the engine.

My Rover has rested for about 14 hours before I made the measurement

12.43 Volts

Pretty much identical to what ours measured when I went to rescue it yesterday afternoon.

Car started up on the second button press. First press caused the dash display to dim and flicker with a couple of revolutions on the starter. Second press it started up as per normal.

Frustrating.

Frustrating.[/quote the fact that the dash flickers makes me think it could be a terminal connection high resistance,ie poor connections on battery or main starter lead and of course not forgetting poor earth lead to engine (see earth lead thread).i would eliminate these first by cleaning all connections even if they look ok before removal .its the old saying think simple,go from there.
