Apply Handbrake or Park brake first?

Its been nearly four months with my FL2 now and it just keeps getting better. In this short time its had to contend with a little off-road due to road closeures, floods, potholes, storm force winds, deep snow & ice etc and it has taken it all in its stride. Its also my first ever auto, so i am just about getting used to not using my left leg and have had to train it (my leg!) to keep still <lol>.

However, i have never had any training on auto's ...what's taught nowadays when stopping - apply the handbrake first then select Park or is it the other way around? I don't want to develop a bad habit that could wear something prematurely and i seem to remember a lazy American-style habit of just using the auto's Park (followed by a gentle rocking) but that was during a holiday way back in the 80's!

How does the auto's Park feature work? Is it 'mechanical' on the drive system, i don't imagine it can just be viscous otherwise wouldn't it creep, yet it seems to hold rock-solid on the steepest inclines without need for handbrake.

Hi Deek, there actually is a post about this somewhere, I'm sure CG will turn his hand to it.
When on a hill, held initially by the foot brake you should select neutral apply the hand brake then let your foot off the foot brake (so the car is in neutral held on the hand brake) it will creep a bit then stop. Then foot back onto footbrake and into park. It's a mechanical lock that is engaged and were told (and agree) that it's not good practice to let the car be 'forcefully held' just on the auto box's park setting.
I have a steep drive and reverse up it backwards - after a few days the procedure above just seems normal. Thumbs Up

I enquired as whilst parking on a slope and using park then handbrake, I was getting a clunk when selecting R or D

footbrake, handbrake THEN park is the way to go

Many thanks mcphersonstrut :o/

I suspected it would be something like that ...and that sounds like a very good new discipline for me to learn. I always wondered about those American TV shows where you see the auto's rocking back-and-forth and suspected it cannot be good for their transmissions.

Anyway ...Lisa from Ice Road Truckers is on the telly - so everything stops for that! <lol>
