Turkey 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey
Xenon vs bi-xenon

Hi Everybody

I´m from Istanbul, Turkey.
I have been reading this forum for a mounth.
My Freelander 2, TD4 SELECT was delivered last week. It is a Stornoway.
SELECT is an option pack for Turkey similar to HSE.

On spec. sheet it is mentioned that the vehicle is equiped with bi-xenons.
When I checked my FL2 I realized that there are one xenon bulb for headligth and one halogen bulb for high beam on each.

The thing that I don't understand is Why they call the system "bi-xenon". There is one halogen bulb and one xenon bulb. Not two xenons. Rolling Eyes

Can someone explain to me the difference between xenon and bi-xenon. Bow down

bi xenon has a little 'shutter' which lowers the light from the xenon bulb,
so dipped = shutter down halogens off
main = shutter up halogens on At work

Your car is bi-xenon for sure.
Xenon is when the xenon bulbs are used only for low beam.
Bi-Xenon is when the xenon bulbs are used for both low and high beam. The same bulbs.
As Chicken George said, when you switch from low beam to high beam, besides the halogens for high beam, a deflector inside the xenon assembly is retracting and the same xenon bulbs are used for high beam also.
Listen when you switch from low to high beam to a metalic clank inside headlights. (Try with window open or even from outside the car).
Or ask for someone to do this and look from the front of the car to the headlight assembly.

Thanks Alex.
Is it same on other cars?
I checked a BMW 5.20d yesterday. There were 2 xenon bulb isntead of one xenon and one halogen combination.

Selamlar Mr. Green

Mine is the same way as described above, bi-xenon with one xenon and one hallogen.

I was looking around other cars and mostly they are built that way. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Only car I know that has two xenon bulbs is the Phaeton (less some supercars). BMW generally have bi xenon for dip (shutter down on full beam) with a normally an H7 halogen to assist. This is normally a reflector light, but some (x5 for example) use a projector type lens since it gives a more precise beam pattern. Thumbs Up

Bi xenon just means the light has two functions (dip and full beam) and already mentioned you will here the click as the shutter that creates the asymetric dip battern lower to allow the full power of the bulb to be projected on the road. It would be intersting to see how xenon only cars manage flasing of head lights. As halogens are good with flasing generally only halogens are activated during flash including the FL2. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto
